Boy meets girl. They fall for each other... the end. Sometimes it's on a sinking ship. Sometimes it's while they're looking for treasure. Sometimes it's while people are trying to kill them. Sometimes it's just for the hell of it. This time, it happens when the world is coming to an end and there is only 3 weeks to live. Sometimes one dies, sometimes they both die, sometimes no one dies. Sure the occasional romance story can be entertaining, but does ever frickin story by default have to be centered around a romance? Will we ever be able to sink a ship, end the world, or anything we can name that won't be centered around a love story? I'm counting down to the day when that happens. Sure, hooking up with another person or finding the one is fun, but there's deeper meaning to the human experience.... isn't there? I'm glad that they didn't name this - Leon the Professional Part 2... In 15 Years It Won't Matter Anyways. Obviously they couldn't bring Leon back, but it was nice to see how Matilda ended up. Little spoilers below Random thoughts; I got a kick out of the meat head still going to the gym, however an entire restaurant staff still going to work with a less than a week to live... pretty lame.

Now this film should've been much better than it actually is. I mean, look at the premise, look at the cast. Instead it ended up being a largely disregarded film. And yet it never quite lives up to its billing, and I don't think made much of a dent at the box office. Both Carell and Knightley do well in their respective roles, if lacking a bit of chemistry, but this film doesn't seem to know whether it's a comedy or a drama, ending up as so many films do, with being neither. It's a shame because as I say, this film should've been much better than what it ended up being.

I LOVED this movie. There's a good amount of surrealism to it, with some rather (intentionally) bizarre parts, but it absolutely works and only adds to the film. At its core, this movie is about love and human relationships and how life's meaning is derived from them. It's very funny and clever, but at the same time very poignant and moving. The ending really got me and stayed with me for weeks after I saw it. Keira Knightley and Steve Carell are both fantastic, and there are some excellent bit roles played by Patton Oswalt, Rob Corddry, and Martin Sheen. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Please do yourself a favor and see this movie. It will make you laugh, think, and maybe even cry a bit.

An asteroid is about to destroy the Earth and humanity as a whole only has three weeks left. Put yourself in those shoes and imagine what you'd do with your few days left. Some would resort to trying all those vices they have previously avoided for being too damaging, amoral or probably both. Some would pull in, treasuring their remaining moments with their loved ones. And some would still go to work, pay their bills and pretend like nothing is happening. One such soul is Dodge (Steve Carell), whose wife promptly abandoned him as soon as the news hit the world and whose friends are constantly trying to entice him into trying drugs or having sex with their other friends. But Dodge simply wants to be left alone and live out the rest of his days with dignity. Then he finds a girl (Keira Knightley) sobbing outside his window. This movie is at its heart of a love story. Two lost souls find each other in the midst of turmoil. But it's the outlandish nature of that turmoil that give this movie its purpose and character. The end of the world paints the whole situation in an unique colour and provides many situations you'd never expect to see in a romcom. And it provokes you into thinking what you'd do in a situation where you only had three weeks to live. Sure, that happens to people everyday with diseases and such, but what if everyone else was on the same boat as well. That changes things and the movie does a credible job of exploring the different possibilities, while still remaining light-hearted enough at its core.I liked this film. The script is clever and witty, the main pair of actors pull off the characters beautifully and it's just an enjoyable experience overall. Recommended for all moviegoers equally.
