Very confusing and extremely boring. The editing feels terrible and disjointed. Story is vague and you cannot connect to any character. No suspense, thrill, mystery or even proper drama. Acting is good by lead characters but the script and screenplay really ruins it all. The whole movie feels too stretched out and there are just too many "odd" names to follow. You easily lose track of all names and story many times throughout the film. The score is also very dull and evokes no emotion at anytime in the entire film. Too much switching into past and present which further adds up to confusion. I am giving a 2 only because of some very talented actors on board, otherwise this is probably a 1/10 movie. You can easily skip your sleeping pills for a night and use this film instead. Easily passable. Not recommended to even the most hardcore movie fanatics. Do not fall for the cast or false ratings and reviews and think of giving it a "try". I did the same (even though the name itself is so lame and sounds like a kid's movie at the first place) and was highly disappointed.
I am revolted at how much violece against women goes unpunished in this movie. Domestic violence or torture, if its a woman, its like its nothing.. It sends a really bad message.
What an incredible waste of so many fine actors! This movie is incomprehensible. Any person who says they understood it is lying. British drama is ordinarily quite good, but this is the worst example I've ever seen. It is an overlong repetition of silences, mostly from Oldman, that explain nothing. Perhaps we were supposed to read his eyes to understand what he was thinking. I only hung on to the end in hopes that the plot would become clear, but it never did. Of course, my IQ is only 140. Perhaps an IQ of 180 is needed to understand it. It reminded me of another mindless flic called "Inception" that I saw two days ago ... total gibberish and unintelligible, and at the end you have no idea whatsoever what happened. Stay away from this one too!
I watched this because I love Gary Oldman. But I spent the entire movie wondering and rewinding and trying to figure out if maybe I should have read the book book first? Because I just could not keep up with what was current and what was past and who was who. And then the end credits came up. Wait...What?
