A few great actors were roped into what can only be described as the WORST movie Jack Black has ever made. Lacking a coherent plot, and failing with every laugh this movie is about as devoid of comedy as a holocaust documentary. I tried to like it and give it a chance, but it just got worse and worse as it went on.By the end I was sure they were using this film in Guantanamo to extract information from terrorists. Just avoid.

This is not a comedy. You'd think with the cast, you'd be laughing the whole way through, but I barely chuckled even once. The trailer makes it seem like it's a funny movie, but it's far more dramatic, and not even the good kind of drama. A little ways in, Black and Marsden end up having sex and it becomes all about how Black seems borderline in love with Marsden. The great actors in this chose a terrible plot with this one. Don't waste your time.

This is a comedy that is quite funny then things twist to a more serious mode but it's still incisively funny when it's dark.A small town is planning a high school reunion. Jack Black plays a guy who wants to get the popular kid from high school to attend. James Marsden plays the actor who made a national commercial on TV. Jack Black plays an annoying character but only he can make it acceptable and funny in a Shallow Hal kind of way. Could easily have been painful but somehow it isn't. James Marsden is very good - he plays strung out and washed out very well. It is good to see how actors can act beyond the action superhero or rom com roles. Some commentary about the small town guy making big but not really making it, high school vs adult hood, marriage and forgiveness. Things work out quite well and there is a proper wedding unlike some other indie movies.Different enough to be watchable.

First off, the movie is not for everyone. It touches upon topics that some people are uncomfortable with. It is not for the ultra-conservative. I knew nothing about this movie going in. I, like a lot of people, expected a typical Jack Black comedy. But this was not that. It was more of a comedy/drama. It was different. I was surprised, uncomfortable, completely intrigued and even quite moved. By the end of the movie I turned to my husband and said: I really loved this movie (he didn't share my opinion). I rarely review anything, but I enjoyed the movie so much, and I felt the ratings didn't do it justice. (Possible spoilers) The movie centers around a married man who goes to LA in search of an actor - a guy he went to high school with (who was the most popular kid in school) to get him to come to the 20 year high school reunion (because he believes if he comes everyone else will come). It starts off sounding like it's going to be a silly, fun movie but it's not that at all. Events occur, leading to lies, leading to more lies, leading to an unhealthy obsession that climaxes with an important lesson learned. You must watch this movie with an open mind and without labeling it or comparing it to any previous works by the actors. Just enjoy it for what it is. A different type of a movie. If I had to think of a movie that came close to the kind of movie this was, I would say American Beauty (although this movie is a lot lighter).
