In the glamorous world of New York City, Rebecca Bloomwood is a fun-loving girl who is really good at shopping - a little too good, perhaps. She dreams of working for her favorite fashion magazine, but can't quite get her foot in the door - until ironically, she snags a job as an advice columnist for a financial magazine published by the same company.

After having read some of the negative reviews for this film, I have noted that most people were upset, and rated this film harshly, because of it having been a poor film adaptation of the book. So, since I have not yet read the book this film is based on, I feel I should judge this film as a film in its own right. I do not in any way mean to discredit the reviews of others', through this review. As a book over film person, myself, I can understand their irritation. For a romantic comedy, this film was hugely entertaining. I've never known a character who could mess up so much, and charmingly: from her compulsive and mostly unbelievable lies, to how her friend's bridesmaid's dress manages to find its way into a charity shop. Isla Fisher's enthusiasm matched the characters: her excitement when visiting a store, or when hearing about a sale. It was just wow. The storyline in itself was also humorous: a young woman struggling to control her urge to 'shop till she drops' finds herself working for a financial savings journal. The irony. Her debt is only getting higher with that stress: only shopping can make her happy. I was surprised she didn't ask her parents for money sooner, considering her crazy spending habits. Equally, I'm surprised her parents didn't freak out or reprimand her behaviour. But outside of that, the film was wonderful- I'd watch with anyone over ten or eleven years of age, it may seem boring, particularly the bits when she's at work, to a younger child.

I have just seen this movie a few days ago, but I had to turn it off at the half of the film... Howewer I like Isla Fisher, her character was incredibly annoying. Oh and the "unexpectable twists" in the movie... my god... she "accidentaly" found herself in a position, where she has to give financial advises, which is the opponent to her lifestyle and her first article was a big success, however she didn't know a single word according to that topic and when she slapped in the face that Finnish or Swedish (i don't really remember, some nordic national) guy, and "fortunately" it meant something good... Yes these cases were totally realistic, why not, they can happen in real life. So after those parts I turned the film off. Plus the main character was all the time giggling and cackling and overplayed her role such as her best friend. Needless to say, I don't recommend it.

As film which gives big stars from Wendie Malick to John Lithgow to Lynn Redgrave unexpected small roles is sure to have other surprise delights. This charming t. ale about a young woman whose entry level job in New York City to quickly binge overspend in its retail shops then refuse to admit she is in deep trouble is a metaphor on why so many denizens of downtown New York City tend not to be among its natives. John Lithgow and Joan Cusak play her unsophisticated, scrimping parents with humor. Because this is social satire built on a romantic storyboard her love interest becomes her foil. He is the black sheep son of a wealthy and prominent socialite tying to make it on his own without flaunting the family fortune or the family connections. They meet cute while queuing up at a takeout hot dog street vendor cart where he pays twenty three dollars for a hot dog because she jumps the line to beg the crude vendor to cash a check for two hundred seventy dollars which will doubtlessly bounce when the bored cashier of a high end boutique is annoyed with her trying to buy a $120 scarf with a repeatedly declined credit card. They somehow for fantasy visit a high end corporate conference retreat in Miami where he is romancing a high profile, long legged corporate climber who puts her in her place whereupon she gets a coveted interview on television during which a collection agent most publicly outs her as a fraud in deep bankruptcy trouble. She for fantasy alienates her roommate by being forced by a character nutcase played by Wendie Malick to give away the bridesmaid dress intended to wear at her roommate's wedding. Romantic fantasy protocol now demands she pull herself together as if this could happen in the real world to hook up with her male idol and get back into the trust of her parents and her former roommate. Well photographed and edited in terms of the starry eyed, peniless émigré to downtown Manhattan living a metaphor of the new young urban Manhattan starry eyed unsophisticated pretty girl, it charms.

The main character Rebecca proved to be one of those people most despise. Selfish, self absorbed, annoying, inconsiderate, wasteful and idiotic. She lies and doesn't apply herself to her work...yet is in debt. So yes that is just the lead character lets get into it a bit more...boring, irritating and dull. I honestly could not see the funny side to the movie, i picked up on Rebecca's obviously forced clumsiness though. Okay so yeah this film is meant to be a bit of lighthearted fun but all i saw was a spoilt brat after a wealthy entrepreneur. I think you get the idea, i hate the film...well the half i watched. I think i'll stick to 'A Clockwork Orange' 'Shawshank redemption' and 'The Butterfly Effect'.
