Homeless and on the run from a military court martial, a damaged ex-special forces soldier navigating London's criminal underworld seizes an opportunity to assume another man's identity -- transforming into an avenging angel in the process. Redemption or also known as Hummingbird is a slow and grounded action drama that showcase's Jason Statham acting abilities in a role like you've never seen him before. The rest of the Cast does a great job as well and despite some pacing issues or even a weird mix of different genres this was a better film than i remembered. (8/10)

Movie Review: "Redemption" (2013)I had a chance to catch this movie starring Jason Statham with a midnight screening on television. The actor carries the picture very well, but director/writer Steven Knight can hardly find a satisfactory balance for main character Joey, who comes to London heavy drinking to so-low down extraordinary physical capebilities as highly-skilled military machine man, traumatised from "Black Ops" in Afghanistan. Even fully-exposed playing, metallic-cross-wearing nun-turning-free-woman actress Agata Buzek as Cristina is not able to rescue the leading man from twisting, cheating, then misunderstood honest-kitchen-working, money-gathering, anonymous flat occupying duties, all alone to avenge his brutally-murdered girl-friend in unforgivingly lame shot of otherwise beautifully-textured exteriors of England's capital, when the showdown of title-giving state of existence goes overboard, while actor Jason Statham keeps face as capable action-moviestar. © 2018 Felix Alexander Dausend (Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC)

Statham is a limited range actor, physical action and threatening eyes being his bread and butter (he is quite good in those two areas). He fled military service, is living with vagrants and on the kindness of a Catholic soup kitchen, but - bless him! - he has a heart of gold, and liberallly dispenses to fellow hoboes what he steals in the name of the person whose apartment he broke into. He also acts as bone-breaker for a Chinese gang that sells drugs, among other nefarious activities. The story is reasonably interesting to begin with, but rapidly shows holes; cinematography is typically basic and geared for the enjoyment of violence and revenge... and the rest of the film is about toying with, and insulting, the Catholic faith, represented by a nun who commits the sins of fornication, stealing a donation to attend ballet, aiding and abetting crime and an AWOL-er who is also a thief -- among other misdeeds that all seem to go unnoticed to her surprisingly unattentive Mother Superior.I give HUMMINGBIRD 3/10 for the good stunts and action. Otherwise, it is instantly forgettable and I hereby vow never to watch it again. I do not pay to watch my faith insulted or to encourage other such attacks.

This is by far the best movie with Jason Statham. Surely, it has its flaws, but you get classic Jason Statham killing machine pumped up on testosterone, plus a very dramatic story, with a lot more charisma and emotions than you got used to in Statham's movies. On the other hand, you do not have to be a Jason Statham fan to watch and enjoy this movie. It's a dramatic action movie, fighting actions are great and realistic, there is no much car chasing action though. If you liked "In Bruges", you will love "Redemption" even more. My girlfriend who hates Jason Statham loved this movie, so give it a shot, I am sure you will like it.
