Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another.

Ewan McGregor has one or two effective scenes in this film, but the film nevertheless is awful with Carrey giving perhaps his worst performance. The film doesn't know what it wants to be - even though it is allegedly based on a true story of a con man de luxe and his love affair. The opening scenes seem to indicate a move towards satire/farce and a typical Carrey characterization. But here he goes far far too far, and his acting stint is painful. The film then swerves back and forth from slapstick to melodrama and back to slapstick. It doesn't work at all. Both actors play gay characters - Carrey camps it all the way to high amperage while McGregor plays it simply and is able to get both laughs and sympathy. Was this film ever rally released??? If so, why??

Being that it was based on true story made this more interesting. With the crazy antics that Steven pulls U would of never thought this could be based on true life. A different role for Jim Carrey as well as Ewem McGregor whom I thought was excellent. A roller coaster of wild antics and strong homosexual themes but average movie with interesting true facts.

What a sack of junk. I am sick and tired of characters who are so Christian and such family men who out of nowhere "decide" to be the real whatever. And of course the wife and kiddies are supposed to be all for it! And of course this guy manages to drop careers like breath mints and always come up with some great boyfriend, etc. I absolutely HATE IT when the new "husband" sits there smirking while the ex-wife is on the phone. As for gay sex in prison, give me a break. There is nothing romantic about it - they are just horny captives, that's all. The old line that lifers write the best love letters is true. What else do they have to do with their time?I simply did not find the premise charming at all but I guess if you are hardcore gay you latch onto any film that you think appeals to your "community." But prison sex is just prison sex - big deal. I did not stick around to see what he was dying from because frankly, I did not care.

Probably the worst, if not THE worst movie I have ever seen. Granted, I actually rented the DVD as an after thought since I usually like both of the headline actors, Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Man, did I ever get broadsided (yeah, right) by this one. Anyway, in hindsight, I realize now that I would have been better off renting "Waterworld" again. Even if I was gay, I think this film would make me feel exploited and embarrassed by its lack of coherent direction and plot. The potential for something much more interesting and relevant was there but sadly shallow in in its character development and conclusion. Even though I knew this movie was not going to be some compelling and seminal piece of work, I still wanted something better than an hour-and-a-half night light. No wonder this was such a box office bomb - I think "Plan B From Outer Space" had a better gross.
