This film reminds me of why I generally don't like ensemble movies. You have to be able to invest in each of the subplots, or you get bored. Now, once in a while I luck out and stumble into an ensemble film that I can buy into, but not often. Here, I couldn't get interested in all of the subplots. Not that there was anything wrong with any of the stories, but they all just didn't interest me.We start with Bradley (Greg Kinnear) who gets dumped by his lesbian wife and begins a relationship with a real estate agent. Okay, I bought into this subplot. Then there's Oscar and Chloe. He's a formed druggie. They do a porn film to make money. Sorry, just couldn't get into it. Nothing wrong with the story. Just didn't interest me.And then there's Morgan Freeman's mixed marriage with Jane Alexander. I found this part of the film very interesting. But, that means a third of the film didn't interest me.So, my only warning here is to be sure you like ensemble stories.

This compelling little movie delivers plenty of character involvement. These are people in or near love. Love is not always good to them. The stories are told in a number of plot tracks that interweave and eventually intersect. One of the two main characters, Bradley (Kinnear), is a kind and open sort who has no luck at love. His first wife leaves him for a woman, and his second leaves him for her previous lover, now suddenly free. The other main character,Harry (Freeman) is nursing his grief over his own tragic loss of an only son.Another track follows the young couple, Oscar and Chloe (Toby Hemingway and the stunning Alexa Davalos), who marry and are happy until tragedy strikes them as well. There is a lot of tragedy in this movie. The picture is shot, paced, and acted excellently, as directed by old pro Robert Benton. It plays out like an intelligent soap, with scenes cutting between the various couples. It is the kind of movie where you do not want it to end because Benton has made these people friends, who you care about.Good script, with very few holes. The most glaring is the start of a new romance for Bradley with the doctor in the ER after he intentionally almost severs his finger. I think the last thing ER docs do is get personally involved with patients. And the absolute last thing they do is get involved with a patient who has purposely injured himself. My only other almost-gripe is that it seems that Morgan Freeman cannot be in a movie without narrating it. A non-gripe is that there is also some relatively frequent nudity, much of which seems gratuitous. I tolerated it.These minor gripes aside, rent it and enjoy it. It is not really a chick-flick, so enjoy it with someone you care about.

A movie that manages to be genuine while making you laugh and cry at the fates of the characters in it. I usually go for romantic comedies rather than drama, but this mix of drama, romance and comedy really did it for me. It did not go overboard in trying to make the viewers cry, like so many dramas tend to do and it managed to mix sad comedy with funny comedy - the way they mix in real life as well.Morgan Freeman is the veritable pillar that holds the whole thing together. One of his better roles (as opposed to many movies that he's been hired to be "the grave guy") and reflects the wisdom of old age very well.

Of all the things in this movie, I learned one thing. That is: Greg Kinnear has trouble with the opposite sex. Most women will just go along with him until they find somebody they want. And the funny part of that is it happens more than once in this movie. The movie is set around several different people, many who become hooked up. Or in Kinnear's case, split up. Add in Morgan Freeman and you got room for loads of people. Its like a soap opera packed into a major release film with Morgan "God" Freeman to spice it up. Some of the instances seemed real, while others did not. And the 'everybody is still friends' mantra near the end is idealistic, but not realistic.Overall, it tries. But it turns out to be an average film. "C"
