Wuthering Heights (2009)

I actually came across this version, by mistake, a lucky mistake! I grew up in the 70's watching the yearly airing of the 1939 version w/ Mom on a Sunday afternoon. (She's gone now, great memories!). I knew of no other version, then I saw the 70's Dalton version & was upset w/ the "butchery" of it, (until my aunt told me that the "butchered" one was the '39 version)! I still don't like the Dalton version, to me, he & Marshall lacked the appeal that Oberon & Oliver had. Then I saw the '92 Fiennes version & loved it, it's the 1st time I saw the entire "book version". Recently, I came across two, 2011 remakes, 1 w/Howson, & 1 w/Rosmer. The Howson version I thought was like Romeo & Juliette, w/DiCaprio, (which I hated, So I didn't bother w/it,). Today it was on TV, I only saw the last 1/2, aside of his killing rabbits,(again and again!) & the characters looking like they need baths, it was OK, 5/6 stars. DVR's set for next week, I'll decide than. Anyway, Amazon Prime, had a PBS/Rosmer version, watched it & loved it! Unlike the '70 & '92 versions both 2011 remakes had attractive actors playing the characters, (Lol, I think that helps getting into the romance of the story instead of unattractive ones that make me cringe when the kiss!) I.M.O. the PBS/Rosmer version topped the Fiennes version! Enjoy!

Do not waste your time with this adaptation of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. I believe the author would most vehemently reject this adaptation as well. It is not true to the book and the screen writer took liberties with the story. It destroys the essence of the story. It begins more in the middle of the book and the characters are shallow. It's a confusing story as it jumps around and focuses on Heathcliff and Cathy characters which are unrecognizable from the characters in the novel. I am amazed when I read praises for this shallow, and cartoonish adaptation. If you want to see a good true to the story of Wuthering Heights - rent the 1998 Masterpiece Theatre with Matthew macfadyen as Hareton.Robert Cavanah and Orla Brady. That version is loyal to the book.

What a beautiful beautiful story! I've never seen anything like it. There were so many valuable lessons one could draw from it. As well as so much depth in the characters and the relationships. It's a story that stays with you long after the credits roll. It is by far the most romantic movie I've ever seen; a passionate story that keeps you captivated from beginning to end. The story captures your heart and inspires emotion. At more than one point, I was moved to tears. This story contains all the elements of a masterpiece. It truly has become a new personal favorite of mine. The casting was perfect and the acting was phenomenal. I highly recommend! You will not be disappointed.

... because it remembered some ideas in the book that touched me (ideas like .. humanity sometimes gives birth to inhumane, a selfish, fanatic love can produce misery etc.). i'm having a feeling of compassion for those who will watch this without having read the book first, because the poor souls won't understand what the story is really about. i absolutely dislike the way heathcliff was portrayed (and not only in this version, i never saw a wuthering heights movie in which heathcliff is heathcliff, as i imagine him in the book) and don't entirely agree with the actor chosen.. don't know why, it's something about his face, he's too beautiful and soft, the heathcliff i always imagined is much rougher and less macho. even if the guy does his best (and i must say he has a great voice, especially at the end of the movie or whenever he is playing the old heathcliff), it's just not enough. cathy is, like someone in another comment perfectly described the cathy in this movie, like a teenage girl swept of her feet by a handsome boy, she doesn't fight him enough, she doesn't seem to be able to match him. the cathy in the book was able to make heathcliff stop whatever he was doing and knee in front of her, here the roles seem to have changed, she's like an obeying wife who does whatever her husband tells her to do. she doesn't seem to have a will of her own, she just follows him. and that's wrong, in the book they were both equally stubborn and strong-willed. overall, i'll give this movie a 6, but just because, like i said before, it reminded me about the book, which i'll start to read in about... 1 minute or so..
