i guess this movie is about loss and deficiency that could never be filled with anything. This is typical subject so it is really important how to make a story without leaving a familiar impression. Like I said, it is familiar to me. Because I have read some short s stories reminiscent of this movie. The images of fishes and ocean reminds me of " legend of suicide" written by David Vann and the story of babysitting the baby who does not exist, A short story of William Trevor which I can't remember the name of. So this movie has beautiful scenes and I like watching it but there is no impression on it. And I cannot actually feel sadness for Emmanuel or Linda

I LOVE this movie. This is a beautiful movie about grief, coping and realizing that somewhere, there is someone that will understand your pain. The beautiful Ms. Biel plays a vulnerable, ethereal woman - a ringer for the younger woman's dead mother. The stepmother - while annoying - means well and tries desperately to "bond" with the young girl. Coming from experience with a stepmother, I realize this does not always go as planned. Emanuele plays a deeply troubled and complex character whose world is brightened by a lonely boy she meets. The father is a loving man, but still with tight grips on reality, giving a sort of "glue" to the unraveling characters. I don't want to delve to much at the risk of spoilers, but this is such a deep, cerebral drama, you must watch it. If you come from a perfect family with no childhood "trauma" of your own, you may not appreciate it as fully as others might, however.

Where does this movie head at? I think this question wasn't important, as the motivation of the director must have been most important. The film does excel when it comes to technical skills and standards. The whole settings and the filming location were really a good choice, and the story itself could have been more than an overused vessel. But the movie lacks as soon as I think about the main actors. Both Jessica Biel and Kaya Scodelario (what a wonderful name) wouldn't match. Until the end I was waiting for some kind of a surprising effect. Though most actors in the supporting roles were quite convincing, the movie left me with the impression of a void, a huge yawning void. May because it was too late for watching 'The Truth About Emanuel', or the unfinished, rough performance of both main actress' led only to a shallow mood. The truth is, there have been many more movies succeeding in what the director intended with this work. However, if you like Kaya Scodelario eyes', or want to see Jessica Biel failing horribly, I would definitely recommend this movie. But don't expect to see a provocative nor sensitive film, it was more like grotesque.

More a surreal allegory than a realistic narrative, 'The Truth about Emanuel' portrays how two women deal with loss. One of them is Emanuel, an abrasive seventeen-year-old whose mother had died at her birth, who becomes increasingly alienated after her father's remarriage. The other is Linda, who moves into the next-door house with a new-born infant. After Emanuel impulsively offers babysitting services to her neighbor, she soon learns the older woman is more troubled than appearances would indicate.Emanuel and Linda supposedly establish a bond which gives them an opportunity to heal their respective traumas, but their relationship isn't very convincing, and the stylized nature of the film also chokes off any real connection to the characters. Although there's some competent acting and luminous cinematography, most of the time everything is too self-consciously strange and slow. Linda and Emanuel are supposed to be oddball personalities, but they're actually rather dull, and the obligatory big revelation doesn't contain any surprises. The resolution of their issues is both glib and implausible, and as a result, the climactic scenes play out without much emotional impact.
