It's Willy Wonka meets Avatar set in the world of Idiocracy with a hundred pop culture references thrown in. There's nothing new here. The leads are un-engaging, the story has been done a thousand times before, and the dialogue is just embarrassing. There's nothing to draw you in, nothing to connect you to the characters, nothing to make you care about this world. Even the special effects aren't anything new.Remember when Spielberg used to make GOOD movies?? It gets 2 stars because I didn't turn it off mid-way but I was bored most of the time. Probably the video-game generation will love it but for those of us who grew up in the REAL world it's a snooze fest. Do yourself a favor and watch Wreck-It-Ralph ... a very similar story done FAR FAR BETTER.

A good movie in itself, this is only loosely based on the book of the same name. If you haven't read the book then you won't miss the deep layers to the story and the struggle of the protagonist. The SFX and scale of the various action sequences was sensational. It was also humorous and clearly aimed at a young audience, drawing in elements of movies like the Goonies. I liked this movie.

So, I am a huge fan of the book and was incredibly worried that the film would not keep in line the fun that the book had, or its about of references. Granted that if the film was to match the book then it would need to be a lot longer! Now, the film, I have watched through fully twice, the first time, I was bitterly disappointed a lot of major parts in the book had been left out, for example Z being captured and hacking IOI, the fallout and separation of Z and Artemis, and the whole way that the first key was found, I loved these parts of the book and was sad not to see them on the big screen. Watching it a second time however has changed my view, what Steven Spielberg has done is brought the Oasis to life, he certainly has made it his own and I have fallen in love with Ready Player One in a whole new way, to me its two seperate things, not a book-to-film. My biggest issue now is there were no Jaws references. Shame that.Thank you Ernest Cline, thank you Steven Spielberg.
