I am a big fan of DC's original animated movies. I love seeing fan-favorite story arcs such as Batman:Year One or All-Star Superman being translated to animation form. This is one release that doesn't follow any specific story arc but instead takes inspiration from all parts of GL mythos. The plot was well-written, better written than the live-action movie. the animation was nice and sleek. The voice acting was great with Victor Garber as Sinestro and Tricia Helfer as Boodikka especially. I loved that they used a secondary villain besides Sinestro too. Hal Jordan's character also develops better here than in the live action movie. The final fight between the corps and Sinestro is also great. SO, In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, this is one release that should not escape your sight.

I like superheroes, and I like comic book movies as much as anybody. Having loved Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and being underwhelmed by the live-action movie, I found myself really liking this film. It is too short in length and I also felt it was rushed in places. However, there is much to like. The animation is very good indeed, the colours are bold and atmospheric, the backgrounds are detailed and the character designs are modelled well. The music is both cool and haunting and the script is humorous in a wry sense as well as suspenseful. The story, even though abridged, has some great twists and poignant drama and any tension is exactly what it promises. The action scenes are violent but very well-choreographed and gripping. The characters are mostly compelling, the titular character is a strong charismatic hero. Even better is Sinestro, possibly what makes the film, his motives are not the most surprising but not overly-predictable either but this is more than a standard villain. The voice acting is dynamic also, especially from Victor Garber and Michael Madsen. All in all, well animated and gripping. 8/10 Bethany Cox

The new Green Lantern movie is out in theaters, and will soon be available on DVD. Although I read comic books growing up, I was totally unfamiliar with The Green Lantern. So I got this animated version from my public library, to gain some familiarity with the subject.I have seen the trailers for the new movie, and from that glimpse I believe this animated version tells pretty much the same story, although it also appears the the villain has a different name.Hal Jordan (voiced by Christopher Meloni) is your normal American hot-shot pilot, and we see him doing a check ride in a simulator. Suddenly the simulator is ripped out of its building and when |Hal gets out comes face-to-face with a strange-looking green alien. But he is not dangerous, he is on a mission, looking for the new member of The Green Lantern society, and the green lantern ring has chosen Hal.Not all goes smoothly when Hal travels intergalactically to be evaluated by the tribunal. |They don't think a human (Earthling) has the discipline to be in The Green Lantern. Hal's main instructor is to be Sinestro (voiced by Victor Garber).Pause to explain, The Green Lantern is not one individual, but is a society of thousands, each one has a particular section of the universe to protect. They wear the green ring which allows them to demonstrate and use a number of very handy super powers. So anyway this is Hal's story, to become accepted as a Green Lantern member, and on the way to accomplishing that has to battle some evil forces that want to take over the universe for their own purposes.

"Green Lantern: First Flight" is a darn decent movie, especially for a direct to DVD movie. The animation is fluid and crisp. By the end of the movie the characters felt well developed. The writing is excellent, though the plot itself is ordinary and would feel clichéd under a less competent writer and director. On the negative, I think that the entire the movie lacks due to its limited time of seventy minutes. I think at five or six minutes, too little time was spent on Earth. I felt that I had no idea who Hal Jordon was before he was a Green Lantern, which could have been fixed by following the main character for a day or even a few hours of his life. The problem with that is there is no part of the movie that the time necessary for that could be taken from. Hal Jordon would be more nervous or anxious or scared that aliens are suddenly coming to his home planet, giving him a power ring and taking him far away from the only planet he has ever been on. Over all a good movie, but it has some problems.
