The Sorcerer and the White Snake (2011)

Put aside the CGI stuff, put aside a "regular" storyline, put aside all you want but let me put this one thing right on: Hardly any other movie moved me and moved me to tears like this one did.While I clearly felt the relations to the chinese ghost story movies I had no idea about how romantic and deeply moving this is going to be. Before watching this movie I'd said it's not possible to put emotion this much into 90 minutes - well, you'll know by the moment "he" is being saved in the water. And if that is enough you'll know by a 2nd water scene. Although so many eastern movies feature intense emotional attention this one goes ahead on step for me: Emotional scenes come off real, with a real meaning, going deep down, not many words needed.I do not remember seeing any other the other character besides Jet Li in other movies so I have no relation to them, having an easy time saying the played their roles very well I never had a moment of disbelieve. Jet Li - who I have gotten to enjoy in other movies - only helps feeling confident about my opinion for this movie: I bought the role of a die-hard demon hunter with difficulty to accept alternative perspectives.Certainly I'm missing out on most of the brilliant aspects of the movie which is always a difficult thing to do as a non-pro reviewer. I see it as a good thing rather than a downside so you get to experience this beauty yourself.Also big props to whoever is responsible for this: The "addition" of animals in the movie. Loved the turtle, the mouse and the rabbit. Adds up so much with the entire lovely piece!I rate this a clear 9 (NINE!) for reasons stated above + ones I could not put into words. One of the best 90 minutes of movie life I got to enjoy <3

Review: This is a straight up love story about a lady demon and human man who fall in love with each other and get married without the guy knowing her deepest secrets. When the demon hunter, Jet Li, finds out that he is living with a demon, he tries his utmost to break up there relationship and get rid of the demon forever. The storyline was quite touching but the graphics were really poor and it seemed to drag after a while. The fight scenes also wasn't that impressive but I did like the scenery and the morals behind the concept. The performances weren't that bad, but it did go a bit over the top in some of the scenes. On the whole, it's an average movie which could have done with some attention to detail. Average!Round-Up: This is the start of my Jet Li series, which is going to be a bit difficult to watch because I REALLY hate subtitles, due to my bad eyesight. In this movie, the subtitles weren't that bad so I was able to keep up with the storyline whilst watching the action. Some of the CGI was terrible, which was surprising because of the movies budget and the ease of making good graphical movies nowadays. As I have only seen the American Jet Li movies, I haven't really got anything to compare this movie to, but it's not a bad start to my personal Jet Li season.Budget: HK$200million Worldwide Gross: $32millionI recommend this movie to people who are into their Jet Li movies about a lady demon and human man who love each other deeply, until the ladies secrets are exposed by the demon hunter. 4/10

Overall, The Sorcerer and the White Snake was an enjoyable movie due its "forbidden love" theme. The romance between Susu, a snake demon, and Xu Xian, a mortal, was sweetly portrayed. Unfortunately, the movie follows the pattern of most forbidden love stories by ending in a way that is bittersweet at best. Love does not conquer all obstacles in this movie. Additionally, those who love fantasy and the supernatural will not be entirely disappointed. The movie has several types of supernatural beings; however, the portrayal of these beings may be disappointing to some. There is a lot of CGI that can be overwhelming. Less CGI and a little more imagination would have made the supernatural elements of the movie less cheesy. I do not typically watch movies for their action scenes so I have very little to say on that front. Perhaps the action lovers will watch this movie solely because Jet Li is in it. The movie does its best to cater to the romantics and those seeking a little more than just a love story. It is worth looking into, especially for those who enjoy romance.

I had high expectation for this movie because it start off really beautifully and Raymond Lam is one of my favorite HK actor so i was hoping this flick would kick ass.Too bad the Special effect was really bad! meh even Old 2003 Special effect was a lot better and look more realist this is clearly "Hey man wanna see some glowing ball on top of a still picture" The Chemistry between the two leading actor/actress was lacking compare to the original White snake story. The best thing out of this movie was the soundtrack which i really enjoy.Jet Li role was also seem to be wasted in this movie. Maybe it was something like "Aye lets use jet li in our movie to market it for the American audience and hopefully we will get more views" Whatever i don't know.
