I have been using IMDb for 8 years and this movie made me decide to register for the first time just to review it. Besides "speaking to your soul" and being extremely well acted by EVERYONE, the movie contains so many viewpoints of the same story, which gives it so much depth and you a feeling that you are watching several stories not just one.I appreciate the positive tunes throughout the movie in spite of the gloominess of the plot as is obvious from the very beginning of the movie. Cameron Diaz is extraordinary in this movie, I do not remember having seen her in any similar or similarly serious role. The flashbacks are done very intricately and the movie respects the intelligence of the viewer with little expected revelations and twists here and there. The only reason I gave it an 8 is because I'm a big fan of tough grading :)Beautiful, sad, joyful, hopeful, captivating, loved every minute of it.

Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) was deliberately conceived to provide for her dying sister Kate (Sofia Vassilieva). As Kate's condition deteriorates, Anna is expected to donate her kidney to save Kate's life. She hires lawyer Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin) to sue her parents Brian (Jason Patric) and Sara (Cameron Diaz) for medical emancipation. This tear jerker melodrama tries to add some court drama. It follows the various characters from their points of view. The actors push their emotional limits. The important thing here is that there are no villains, a kid is dying and there is family dysfunction. I would prefer to follow Kate for the whole movie. She has the most compelling melodrama in a teen romance. Also she's the center of everybody's stories. The court drama poses a few problems with limited solution. The twist solves most of the problems but leaves one dangling thread. There is no way Kate would do that to Anna based on their relationship on screen. Overall, the movie gets a couple of sniffles and the court drama became less important.

An incredibly overrated film that I cannot see as anything but a complete mess that relies on nothing but a hard-hitting topic, in which's only existence is to produce tears. The cinematography is bland and ugly (I did not like the overuse of the soft golden lighting). The acting is often questionable, as is the scripting. Not to mention the absolute mess of a narrative that jumps all over the place constantly in a failed attempt to be arty, but doesn't have any effect other than confusing the plot. Characters are dull and have barely any actual realism to them; the same goes for the characters' relations and interactions with one another (Kate and her "boyfriend" come across as cheesy, unlikeable and totally forced; only distracting us further from the main story). I'm sorry, but the film is like a comedy that tries time and time again to make its audience laugh, but only succeeds once or twice towards the end (making a film and repeatedly trying to make it sad straight off from the moment it begins isn't making a good film - it's just like a first draft script where the producers were like "What would be a good, hard hitting scene?" and adding all of them into the first hour-or-so without making them actually work by working on making the actual characters feel real and likable). It's just not a well made film at all.Although I didn't mind the Saul Goodman-like lawyer too much :pOverall rating: 1.8/10 (...I gave the Nic Cage Wicker Man a higher rating...).
