I have always like two genres of movies better than all other genres (Historical Fiction/Drama & Sci Fi adventures). So it come to reason that I'd was interested in this one from the first time that I saw the previews. Then I seen it and discovered that this was more of a concept film than anything. ......And to be frank with you the concept doesn't sell! ! ! The movie takes place in a type of Neo-Futuristic landscape based on the 1930's. I though the story was actually good. and the acting was actually good. The musical score was actually good. but the fantasy- ish pulp fictionized comic book look of the film actual made it hard to watch.(at least it did for me) This film is worth watch one time ....it not going to become an instant sci-fi classic with you. Nor will this film generate enough interest that you'd want to see a sequel(trust me, If they make a sequel I will not bother to see it)This film will never rival/compete with other sci-fi films like the Star Wars, Alien(s), Starship Troopers, Matrix,Star Trek and other franchises seem to produce every time out.I'm giving it 4 out of 10 stars (And I'm only going that high with it because the acting & musical score are good)

Sky Captain is a loving distillation of 1930s serials into an enjoyable, beautiful, intriguing, fun film that never takes itself serious but is ultimately mindless. And that's what such films should be. In my opinion this is far and away the best of it's type, far surpassing the Marvel and Transformer spectacles. While adopting many of the plot points and action sequences of serials it still manages to look fresh and surprising. While I haven't the time or energy to review all of the previous posts, it surprised me that many criticized the use of color. One even said it was adopting the colorized look of the 1970s. You'll notice that the only part of the film that had true color was The Wizard of Oz showing on the Radio City Music Hall screen. In point of fact the film was a deliberate attempt to copy the look of two-strip Technicolor which was used up to 1935. As a fan of this look I go out of my way to find such films. Sky Captain succeeded admirably in copying it.Much criticism is lodged about the lack of sparks between the principals. This also is in keeping with serials where the only clinch was the closing scene. Instead, the rivalry between investigator and reporter with lots of wisecracking copies the feel beautifully. While all of this has become hackneyed from decades of use, it is handled well and intelligently. The CGI is used with care and as an adjunct to the plot. Small details keep popping up that will require multiple viewings to assimilate. This is a film for film fans. I consider it a classic.

The opening credits of Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow promise exactly what the film delivers, a ripping yarn in the mold of Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers, with all the suspension of disbelief that those matinée serials required of the viewer. The PG rating is the tell-tale that you should not expect plotting of Nolanian complexity, this is a kids' film, and if you treat it like that, it's good fun. There is the odd gaping plot hole, but there are also some nice touches, like the appearance of Laurence Olivier and a certain recurring camera device for example, which help counteract the patchiness of the jeopardy. If you can accept occasional failings such as the yawning chasm in the lack of resolution of the research subject scene, this can be an enjoyable romp with a watchable cast.

This film must not be forgotten. In all aspects of entertainment and visual effect, the story was wonderfully crafted and I watched it with my ten year old daughter and felt entirely captured by it. This was probably one of the best all round films of my life. And that says a lot from a man who has grown up with movies. Do not forget this film. Keep it, cherish it and let the closing line linger as the best closing line in film history, such a cack, a wonderful warm and lovely laugh right at the end. A beautifully crafted mix, wonderful is the alternate history, the use of female heroine, the wonderful dropped lines and mix of humour and satire. The only thing perhaps, is a wish it did not include race elements because it sort of can be perceived as inciting a little racism. This is movie perfection, one that will be returned to for the rest of my life, my daughter will probably do the same.
