It's magical, but maybe not in the way you expect. A troubled boy (Josh Hutcherson = Jess) from a strict religious family, befriends a new girl (AnnaSophia Robb = Leslie). She is unconventionally dressed, with striking straight blonde cropped hair. She is the more adventurous of the two, while he is initially quite timid - possibly because of his strict upbringing, and the perceived indifference of his parents. He is irritable at times, very cross when his young sister draws all over his art book. He is also annoyed when Leslie wins a school race. That's what I like about it - not all sweetness and light. Jess and Leslie inevitably become friends. One day after school they stumble on an overgrown forest area which becomes their magical kingdom. The kingdom is only accessible via a swing rope across a creek (The rope plays an important part later on in the story). In the meantime, the film wisely concentrates on reality, with only occasional excursions into the realm of the imagination. The CGI is strictly rationed - which is fine by me. The two friends form a deep bond, escaping as often as they can. But Jess has chores doled out by his over-strict father (who has money worries). His relationship with his father is an understated but important element, developing as the movie progresses. When Jess visits Leslie's home, he discovers a very different, relaxed lifestyle. He helps them paint a room gold. She reciprocates by attending a church service with him. At school they both experience the kind of low-level bullying we have all encountered; but also, sympathetic teaching. One teacher, recognising his artistic talent, invites Jess to an art gallery. For reasons he doesn't fully understand, he fails to invite Leslie on this trip. We sense that the plot is moving towards some sort of epiphany. What I love about this movie is the complete lack of sentimentality and self-pity. Somehow it is nonetheless deeply moving. It's a shame the mothers don't play a greater role, I would like to know more about them; but really there is little to criticise. The performance of Josh Hutcherson as Jess I found quite remarkable. I get so frustrated with movies these days, it's miraculous to find one which ticks all the boxes.

Everyone probably experienced this during childhood- the uncertain border between the real and imaginary world, when the imagined world might seem you more realistic than the real one. I remember my imaginations of my childhood and I now follow my daughter creating imaginary worlds herself.Bridge to Terabithia is a marvelous movie about childhood, imagination, love and attachment.Young Jess Aarons is not very happy about his life. At home he deals with four sisters, at school he has no friends. He is a very good painter, but no one has told him about that. But one day she meets Leslie Burke- a new student in his school, a very bright and shiny girl with a charming smile and charming personality. She grew up in a very different family than Jess did. Her parents know almost everything about her life (they even know that Jess is a good painter) they encourage her to be bright and to be different. She is not only a good runner but also knows how to deal with problems at school. But most importantly she knows how to make up stories, and how to imagine. She helps Jess to do the same. Jess has the skill and they make up the story, their world together- a fascinating, beautiful world- Terabithia.Jess's little sister also can see Terabithia maybe a little bit different, with purple flowers. Terabithia is there for everyone who is a child, who has the fascinating imagination of little ones. My review was about the story. All the other things of the movie (filming, acting, etc) is good as well. But the movie is more about the story that will make you smile and maybe move you to your own Terabithia for a second.

This is a sweet story, but with a twist of sad, it is very well made, entertaining and pleasant to watch with a bit of lecture or positive messaging about having an open mind, being positive and seeing the troubled person behind the bully. This is a nice children's movie, it is a "small" film with a big hearth, believable and honest dialogue. It has a lot of things you might not see in other movies but also a lot that we are used to from other films in the same genre, it has moving moments, imaginary friends, responsibilities and consequences. All in all a very nice film for children of all ages, I and the kids was entertained, them a little bit more then I, but okay for a nice family afternoon.
