this film is a pure piece of American schmaltz, it has a small town, a man who changes his way because of the good hearted folk around and if you look up Capraesque in the dictionary the chances are that it would say "... see Doc Hollywood". I love it. As a piece of pure Sunday afternoon entertainment it has the lot. Winning performances from an assured cast, a witty script and a warm cuddly plot. Michael J Fox brings a natural charm to his role as the young Doctor who is forced to spend time in the small southern town of Grady (home of the Grady Squash) after knocking down the judges newly built fence. He is sentenced to community service under the eye of the irrascible Dr Hogue (played with relish by Barnard Hughes)and unexpectedly falls in love - with a woman (Lou the ambulance driver) and gradually the town. The plot's simple, but Fox carries it well, and he's surrounded by a great bunch of quirky characters.Warner is great as the love interest, sexy, tough yet vulnerable, and always believable. It's funny,heart-warming,and thoroughly enjoyable. The cast is filled out with some lovely turns from David Ogden Stiers, Woody Harrelson and Bridget Fonda and a hilarious knowing cameo from George Hamilton. For me the real stars are the locals - the man who is so pleased with the Doc he brings him a pig, the couple who see the Doc so he can read their letters, and a jack-handed fisherman are just a few of the small delights this film offers. The movie teaches some broad values while giving tons of smiles!Overall rating: 8 out of 10.

Michael J. Fox plays a hotshot surgeon on his way to Beverly Hills when he takes a detour that leads to him wrecking his car in a small Southern town. A judge sentences him to community service as the town's doctor. This leads to many fish-out-of-water situations between the easily-frustrated Fox and the local rubes, as well as his becoming enamored with ambulance driver Julie Warner.Nice comedy helped by a likable cast. Arguably Fox's best movie post-Back to the Future sequels. This movie gave us the first and only look at what God gave lovely Julie Warner to work with. Also gave us one-hit wonder Chesney Hawkes' only hit, the appropriately-titled "The One and Only." It's formulaic and predictable but undeniably charming and pleasant.

Once again Hollywood doctors a person's life so they end up wanting to get married and reproduce, rather than being happy as a rich person living near the beach. I know plenty of unmarried people who are happy with their lives, but Hollywood makes them look like they must be miserable selfish sociopaths who just want to chase a dollar and live shallow self serving lives. The only Doc Hollywood obvious from this film is Hollywood itself, where these types of films are plentiful and the audiences who buy them are also plentiful since they want to "feel good" (as they are told what to feel good about).Ironically, these films are made by wealthy producers and directors just wanting to chase a dollar (and many sexual partners in most cases)by telling other people what to do with their lives. "Do what I say and not what I do" (so I can have your money and that of your offspring I told you to have). These producers tell unmarried people they are socially unacceptable if they don't want a husband/ wife and kids- telling their relatives to pressure them into getting all of the above STAT (like the old women in this movie do with MJ fox's character). They also tell you that you need someone else attached to you by marriage to be whole and happy, thus women stuck by abusive men in the past and now. Thanks Doc Hollywood.

I really enjoyed this movie. Essentially, "Dr. Ben Stone" (Michael J. Fox) is a promising young surgeon who, after two years in the emergency room at Washington Presbyterian Hospital, has his heart set on a cushy job doing cosmetic surgery in Beverly Hills. As he begins his drive from the East Coast to California he happens to have an automobile accident in the small town of Grady, South Carolina. Unfortunately for him, his accident demolishes the picket fence belonging to "Judge Evans" (Roberts Blossom) and he gets sentenced to perform 32 hours of medical care for reckless driving. In no time at all the sly mayor of Grady, "Nick Nicholson" (David Ogden Stiers) is leading a campaign to get Dr. Stone to take up permanent residency. What follows is a funny yet wistful story that involves a bunch of amusing characters. I really enjoyed the performances of both Michael J. Fox and David Ogden Stiers. Also quite amusing was the mechanic named "Melvin" (Mel Winkler) and "Nurse Packer" (Eyde Byrde). Along with that, both "Vialula" (Julie Warner) and "Nancy Lee Nicholson" (Bridget Fonda) were quite pleasing to the eye as well. In short, for a romantic-comedy this one is definitely above average.
