The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991)

Leslie Nielsen is back as Lt. Frank Drebin and so are writer/producer/directors Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker. This sequel didn't seem as funny as the first, but it's hard not to find Nielsen's deadly serious though thoroughly incompetent police detective hilarious. Peter Sellars did the same thing with Inspector Clouseau, but riffing on jewel heist films instead of Dragnet police procedurals. The plot, not that it really matters, revolves around Drebin's ex-girlfriend Priscilla Presley's new boyfriend Robert Goulet's plot to kidnap a scientist as part of an energy scheme. Nothing brilliant, but you'll chuckle.

Lots of hits and misses on this one. Mostly misses. This sequel is less funny than I remembered. Some of the gags are way too long. The parody of "Ghost" is so dated now - it's simply a mistake to build an entire scene on something contemporary (like most of the lowest-of-the-lowest-parodies do).One thing that makes AIRPLANE so much better is that they don't put all the jokes and punchlines "in your face". There are ton of jokes that happen in the background and you can easily miss them if you don't pay attention (and haven't seen the movie a hundred times before). With THE NAKED GUN, all the jokes and punchlines are made very obvious, which loses a lot of its strength IMO.Priscilla Presley is pretty bad in her role.

This was way better than I expected. Generally, sequels tend to be not that great, so I was surprised when I actually found myself chuckling in this movie. It doesn't even come close to the original, though. Really, it's just a rehash of the first one, but it does it right. It has clever, humorous lines thrown in there with some good 'ol slapstick. It could have been much, much worse, and I'm grateful that they put this much care into this one. I can forgive it for most of it's flaws because, in the end, all I need from a comedy is for it to make me laugh and have fun. I don't need a intricate plot and complex characters, I just need to laugh, this movie meets those requirements. I say give it a watch. I hope Zuckerburg can keep bringing the laughs in the 3rd movie

The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell Of Fear is a great movie with a hilarious story line,a good cast (except for Leslie Nielsen,who is brilliant!) and brilliant characters,Frank Drebin being one of my favourite movie characters of all time.The movie certainly isn't as good as the first Naked Gun,but its still a lot of fun,and the first is hard to compete with,its comedy gold.It still manages to be a good fresh sequel,with lots of laughs from start to finish.Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) is back and must save a kidnapped scientist who has been taken by his ex-girlfriends new love interest,who Frank still has feelings for.
