Kate is a bad actor, cute chick although. When the main female character starts the film with a shower scene, ok the expectations for the movie goes down. Also the directory was so bad (see the trivia), the scenes in the snow storm were so blurring.

Not a grandiose film in the genre but holds the suspense through the film. Definitely NOT one of Kate Beckinsale's( Underworld) more enduring performances but it made for the timidness of her character. Taking place in the frozen tundra of Antarctica the film freezes it's audience with a mild temperature in the plot. A murder, a killer on the loose, a cover up, it was suspense filled but dry in it's routine delivery. It certainly is an afternoon filler for boredom. BUT I gave it a 7 for it's cinematography and Tom Skerritt's performance, AND because I am a Kate Beckinsale fan.

Whiteout is a dismal murder mystery thriller. It looks like once the film was completed, it went through lots of post production editing to salvage something that could be released hence why Stuart Baird is listed as a supervising editor.Kate Beckinsale plays a US Marshal at an international research base in Antarctica. When a body is found she needs to investigate a possible homicide before winter sets in and it gets dark for some months. We can guess that the murder is somehow linked to the initial scenes we saw of a Russian plane some years earlier that crash landed as it was being sabotaged by some of its crew.Director Dominic Sena is out of his depth here. The film looks cheap with dodgy CGI snowstorms. The mystery is mediocre, things happen and it makes no sense. Even when the mystery is cleared up, we have another twist which is predictable.

People have commented on the beautiful shots of the colorful sky, so I suppose there were a few instances of good cinematography in the movie. However, in my opinion, most of the cinematography, editing and art direction sucked. First of all, it was filmed in Canada. Was there even one scene filmed in Antarctica? I'm sure Antarctica has beauty of it's own separate from Canada (I've been to both), but one wouldn't know it from this film, as it was Antarctica in fantasy only. As people have pointed out, where were the penguins? Where were the walruses? What bothered me most about the art direction of this movie was the many scenes where one couldn't hardly see anything. Either snow storm, or dark rooms lit by a little flashlight, or just a scene with hardly anything showing, most of the movie seemed to be on such a low budget that they didn't having anything in the back of the scene to show!Others have pointed out the limitations of this movie, so I won't repeat that. I agree with them wholeheartedly.
