When he is suspended from his university job for his outlandish ideas, Professor John Venkenheim leads a documentary film crew to the rim of the Arctic Circle in a desperate effort to vindicate his academic reputation. His theory: Mary Shelley's ghastly story, "Frankenstein," is, in fact, a work of non-fiction disguised as fantasy. In the vast, frozen wilderness, Venkenheim and his team search for the legendary monster, a creature mired in mystery and drenched in blood. What they find is an unspeakable truth more terrifying than any fiction...a nightmare from which there is no waking.

First of all, let me say straight away that I was compelled to write this review after reading a few long 10 star reviews for this movie. Sorry, but I can't explain the existence of these reviews in any way other than the filmmakers' friends and other interested parties singing praise without any substance. I was not profoundly disgusted by this movie, but there is simply no way on earth that anyone would objectively give it 10 stars. Praising this plot because it apparently connects to where the novel leaves it? Are you even serious? The good sides of this movie is the actors being reasonably professional (not to be confused with a very limited effort at character development), the video quality and the scenery. "B" for the effort to go all the way to some cabin in the coldness. You can see that the filmmakers had the money to spend on stuff such as good clothes, renting the snowmobiles, and as I said, the camera-work was professional (no shaky "hidden footage" bs). On the other hand, there are absolutely no special effects. The entire volume of "blood" in the movie probably was recreated with one tiny package of sriracha sauce with a highly questionable result. I sighed when they find "blood traces" that looked like someone had a paper cut. There was so much to do potentially in terms of the plot. Just a few ideas that crossed my mind while watching: 1) discover that it was actually a real bear, while building the tension around the guy's obsession with the Frankenstein theory; 2) discover that it is a Frankenstein monster with an objective, say, to pull body parts from the victims in order to "replenish" his constitution; 3) have the monster actually respond in some fashion to the guy's efforts to connect to him. But hey, let's just leave it with a big guy who apparently feels the need to dress like a human, but will avoid the humanity at any cost and kill any person who encounters him. And btw, would also have a completely irrational idea to first mess up with the people in the cabin by stealing their snowmobiles. What. Why. I didn't give this movie one star because the scenery was nice, the actors gave it a good try, so it's not "awful" per se, but two stars fit it nicely. Also, what the hell? I watched it because it was recommended as similar to the "Dyatlov Pass Incident". DPI is quite an interesting movie, but I found no similarities. Again, gotta be the filmmakers' friends desperately trying to spread the word to get people to watch this rather sad effort. What lesson do we learn? I don't regret the time I spent watching, but I regret the money filmmakers wasted on this without having a good story to tell, when the money could be spent on so many useful causes.

I watch A LOT of found footage films and this one has to be on my top 10 list of the worse. The first thing I noticed was that certain parts of the movie were filmed found footage style and some parts where filmed through another point of view NOT found footage. So what is this?? Found footage or not? Secondly they spend 90% of the movie shooting the ship!!! Keeps you waiting and waiting... when is this going to go DOWN???!!!We don't give a rats bum about your theories we just want to see some good scary action fun!!!The main character is a major nerd who you just want Frankenstein to kill. Also he has a hot girlfriend who claims that he doesn't spend enough time with her and to much time on finding Frankenstein. What does she see in this little dump????Anyways moving on... with about 15 minutes left in the movie stuff starts to go down. But it was so badly done that it was laughable!! You see "Frankenstein" who just looks like a yeti for literally 1 minute of camera time!!! Everyone dies as expected and the Yeti kidnaps the hot girl so shag later, the end!!Man I half butted this review because I got frustrated just thinking about this movie.

Just watched The Frankenstein Theory (2013) with hope and enthusiasm, for both to be dashed sadly to the ground or maybe I should say snow. Our heroes, the descendant of Frankenstein or as he claims should be Venkenheim, a guide and a film team go to Canada to search for the Frankenstein monster in the Artic hoping to prove its existence. The filming is good the acting is not bad but the story line and script is weak and the err umm monster when we did see him was ....... What????? My sons when they were young could have made better creature costumes and today they definitely can. This film is in the Blair Witch genre and if you like that type of film you will be happy enough to watch this. But... be warned if you want a reasonable storyline, and some decent characters this is not for you. Its not scary even with all the lights out. Sorry

I just watched The Frankenstein Theory on Netflix, and I was remarkably impressed. I would personally rank it amongst my top five found-footage films, alongside The Blair Witch Project, V/H/S, Grave Encounters, and Devil's Pass. I particularly loved the random interjection of quirky humor and personality flaws -- something which seems to be a rarity in this genre nowadays. It boosted the suspension of disbelief and the gave the movie some added smarts. I genuinely felt as if I was following ordinary people on an impromptu expedition rather than underpaid actors reading from a B-movie script. I also think the unusual choice of location was sufficiently compelling given the story's mythological basis (a la Devil's Pass and The Blair Witch Project). Although, the movie didn't pick up pace until the end, I enjoyed the character development. It added to the documentary's credibility and curiosity, rather than the typical detachment that I often experience with these types of films. My only disappointment was the final scene. It was almost too predictable. Maybe the director ran out of ideas? Still, that's a minor criticism given the overall production value. Highly recommended for anybody that is looking for a suspenseful late night sci-fi flick and is willing to tread off the beaten path of Paranormal Activity lookalikes.
