Realistic, compelling, insightful - these are not usually the words used to describe post apocalyptic movies, but they fit this one. Set in Barcelona, a world wide pandemic of agoraphobia strikes and people are stranded at work, in shops, in their homes. Marc and Enrigue become an unlikely team in that each is stuck at work and they need to reach their girlfriend and Father respectively. Both Spanish actors do a credible job of playing their roles, without some of the corny, expected actions you get in movies of this sort. Aside from the world wide agoraphobia, this movie makes you think this could really happen. The back story emerges as Marc is reminded of the past - especially the recent past when he learns that his girlfriend is pregnant. (And of course his last conversation with her was that he wondered how anyone would want to bring a new life into this screwed up world. Way to go Marc, you know how to say the right thing at just the right time.) At the time he did not know she was pregnant. There is plenty of tension as they make their way through the sewers of Barcelona to seek their loved ones, but this movie does not produce a lot of those "jump out at you" scares that are common in these types of movies. The movie was better for their absence. But what really makes the movie is the uplifting ending. I won't tell you what it is, because this movie is worth seeing. But you will feel the love and hope portrayed at the end. An ending worthy of Dean Koontz.I have a list of apocalyptic movies to watch - I'll be surprised if any of them surpass this one.

Los Ultimos Dias is quite simply one of the best Sci-fis I've seen in years. Apocalyptic in style and set amidst the backdrop of Barcelona it explores several modern themes: our ever increasingly insular, urban and isolated lifestyles and our obsession with individualism and self reliance. Directors David and Alex Pastor deliver us these themes with European subtlety; never lecturing nor forcing the point in a way American cinema seems often too frightened to attempt with this genre; a film for adults comparable and, dare I say it, even better than The Road (although not quite as morbid).I suspect the subtitles will put some English speakers off, which is a shame as the script is tight enough, the sets visual enough, and the acting engaging enough, as to hardly notice them; so lost I was at times in this dark, apocalyptic, nightmare. More ambitious European projects please! I may be English but I still find myself relating more to a Spanish sci-fi than to the heavy handed, patronising, spoon-fed treacle that constantly oozes from Hollywood.

reminiscent of films along the lines of i am legend and 28 days later, this is the story of our population forced to survive something as simple as going outside. this was a wonderful comment on how reliant we've become on technology and how we're taking our earth for granted and mistreating it. it gave a glimpse into a society that has been brought back to it's roots. it was a beautiful film that showed how well people can band together, but how they often times fight as well, even in the face of danger. the film was well acted also. the two male leads gave a wonderful performance. Quim Gutierrez gave an amazing performance as Marc. the settings, despite a majority of them being inside, were gorgeous.

... but is it? You have to watch the movie to see if and what the title ultimately means. One thing is for sure, this is played more than well. I know some people had issues with the ending, but it's always tough to end a movie that is as rough as this. No matter what way the director takes, it'll be scrutinized. But until then, it's pure survival and the actors really make the most of it. The viewer will find himself thinking: What would I do? But that only works at the beginning. To make this hold up longer there is a journey, our main character has a goal. If you're not with him, you might not enjoy the ride as much. Teaming him up with another character who obviously has other values and goals is genius. Science Fiction Fantasy with Doom flavor ... Tasty for me ...
