Edge of Winter (2016)

Elliot's (Joel Kinnaman) life is in a downward spiral. He lost his job. His right arm is in a cast from where he belted his boss. Collection agencies are after him. Now to pour salt in the wound his ex-wife (Rachelle Lefevre) is going on a cruise with her successful husband (Shaun Benson). He offers Elliot a job at the warehouse as they drop off the two boys for him to watch. Elliot is not a role model father. He opts to take the kids shooting which involves a very extensive road trip in the middle of winter. Elliot likes his drink and he doesn't let driving get in the way. Events cause his downward spiral to accelerate as they get stuck in the wilds of Canada.This is another Canadian drama with the word "Winter" or "Snow" in the title. (Write about things you know.) Much of the film is Elliot bonding, or not bonding with his estranged sons...then the sons coming to terms with their father. The action picks up at the end, but for me the film was much of a snoozer.Guide: No sex or nudity. 2 blurred F-words.

Overall this story was very interesting, but it's definitely not a movie that will fit everyone's favorites list. If you're looking for a feel good movie this isn't it. The overall tone and plot of the movie is very serious and somewhat dark. It shows what lengths a father is willing to go to in order to protect and keep his children. The movie is very much so driven by its characters, it starts out slow but once you get a feel for the characters and what's going on it goes by like a bullet. The movie is fairly clean, no nudity, not a lot of violence, several F bombs but not constant and hardly any other profanities. minor drinking, nothing really notably "bad."Personally I loved this movie, I thought it had great acting, nice scenery, realistic dialogue and realistic motivations from the characters. If you haven't seen this it's definitely worth the watch.

I adored this movie. The acting was superb, the landscape mystical and frightening and the plot unusual with minimal progression and development and that is the main reason the story is so intriguing. The development of the main character, his journey into madness is fascinating. The tortuous, deep, disturbed and loving relationship with his kids will tear your heart apart. However there is no wicked villain here but just a man who is grown desperate and seriously ill. Even though there are some cross-references to the Oedipus complex and the sacrifice of the father this element is not overwhelming. What is more captivating is the desolation and despair caused by the inability of the father to fulfill the role that he is expected to and his lack of means to express his love and commitment to his kids. His anxiety and fears turn him into a psychotic killer. Whether he was already ill before the adventure in the snow is not explained clearly therefore any guess is the right one. Besides this is not very important.The action pace is good and the film will provide you with some good chills. There is no twist in this movie though and the thriller is more of a drama since it is quite clear where the plot is heading to from the very start. The final scene is award worthy both for the father's and younger kid's interpretation, it left me in tears. Unique!

very poor effort. no story. senseless plot. there are so many problems that its useless even discussing anything.In fact any time spent discussing this movie is time wasted. Please save your time and just watch anything else. I fell asleep during the film and that was the best part for me during the film. I can't believe that this was released and no one tried to stop this film from being made. Shame on all the people involved. Anyways, f it. its over now. And to post this review i have to write at least ten lines about the film so i am just going to continue writing this film so that i can warn people not to watch it.
