Based on a comic by Tsukasa Houjo, City Hunter was made because a Japanese fan mentioned to Jackie Chan that he looks like Ryo Saeba.Ryo Saeba (Jackie Chan) is asked to bring back Seiko (Kumoko Goto) back to Japan. On their way back, the luxury liner carrying both gets high jacked by gangs. Ryo, Seiko and others battle the gang inside the luxury liner. The movie is made to appeal to both Hong Kong and Japanese audience, and actor Joey Wong who was popular at the time in Japan appears as Ryo Saeba's girlfriend. Kumiko Goto who was popular in Japan at the time also appears. All star cast of Richard Norton, Leon Lai, and Chingmy Yau also appears to appeal to audiences in both countries. There's a comical scene where characters that looks like the Street Fighter appearing in fight scenes. This movie is bit different from other Jackie Chan movies, in that body exploitation with many men and women in their swim suit appearing, and overt comedy is part of the story. But the fight scene between Richard Norton and Jackie Chan is pure Jackie Chan movie. Many people say this is the only Jackie Chan movie that doesn't work, but it is an entertaining movie with some good action spread in between.

A comedy based on a Japanese manga of the same name. It has Jackie acting as a PI who tends to day dream a lot (about girls in bikinis...) He and his PA go aboard a cruise ship to rescue a millionaire's daughter. The fight scenes are pretty good (Jackie in his younger days is extremely agile) and makes good use of the surrounding props.I would say the most exciting fight scene and the most humorous would be when 2 actors (cannot remember their names) crashed into a Street Fighter II machine and get transformed into Dhalsim and Guile respectively. The evil pony tail villain is transformed into Ken. Then Jackie comes along, first becomes E. Honda then Chun Li. It's something else seeing Jackie dress in a chong sum, jumping up and down.Another scene that is pretty campy is Leon Lai who portrays a card shark. Every time he does a scene involving saving a girl, it's got into slow motion and he tend to blow his fringe.Of course, lots of gratuitous gunfire, shooting and beating up people. But somehow, no blood or very minimal blood is lost. All in all, I think this is one of the greater comedy movies made by Jackie Chan when he is willing to act goofy and elicit a few laughs. I would definitely recommended it for easy viewing or just a relaxing night. The one aspect that might be a bit irritating to people would be that if the viewer cannot understand Cantonese/mandarin, the impact would be lessen as the meaning of certain innuendos would be lost in translation to English subtitles.

Version: Cantonese, English subtitles (by SBS).In City Hunter, Jackie goes away from his usual up-standing good-guy characters, to a seedy private eye, more interested in women and food than anything else. He is asked to find the run-away daughter of a media mogul. He just happens to end up on a cruise-ship, which is of course, hijacked by terrorists (white guys, naturally) - now its up to Jackie, and the legion of good guys he meets, to save the day.'City Hunter' is Jackie Chan in a live-action cartoon. Jackie gets hit with giant mallets (in true Warner Bros style), tries to upstage Bruce Lee, begs bad guys for food, dresses up in drag, and even does the Moonwalk. The Moonwalk! Supported by an eclectic range of good guys, Jackie takes on the nefarious white evil guys. Awesome.Plot? What plot? This movie is all about awesomeness, and how awesome Jackie Chan is. 'City Hunter' is so awesome. Some pretty cool, and very funny fights with Gary Daniels and Richard Norton. Richard Norton is also awesome.8/10 - My favourite movie. If you don't have a sense of awesomeness, then you probably won't like it.

I bought a 3 DVD box named "Manga in motion" which contained the movies "Story Of Ricky", "Dragon From Russia" and "City Hunter". I watched the two other movies and thought that they were OK, so I didn't expect very much from this movie, I thought it may as well be "OK". The movie starts with a very stupid scene and goes worse and much, much more worse all the time. The humor is very stupid (even for a hong kong movie), and so is the over-acting. I just had to fight to watch the first 30 minutes of the movie. Then, in the end comes the Street fighter scene. I can honestly say that I have never seen anything as stupid and retarded as that scene. That scene almost made me stop watching the movie, but I fought until the end. The movie is without a doubt Jackie Chan's worst movie, and don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Chan. But this kind of a movie is something that I think they shouldn't have done. 2/10 *** WORST JACKIE CHAN MOVIE EVER ***
