This version of the famous literary novel Devdas is extremely opulent, so much so that caste and class differences suddenly make little sense when both families are so incredibly wealthy. Apart from this misstep, and some overacting in the first half-hour, the film is definitely worth watching. All three leads Shahrukh, Aishwarya and Madhuri are in top form. Kirron Kher is good though she tends to overact. There are some dazzling musical numbers including "Dola Re" which is a tremendous show-stopper. The film is essentially a tragedy and Bhansali brings this point home (MINOR SPOILERS) in the heart-breaking climax. Recommended.Overall 8/10

That is true. Bollywood films do base a lot of their ideas off of Hollywood movies, down to the point of plagirism (they even have used recent movies, such as Hitch, for material as well), but Devdas is not one of these cases. Counting this version, it's been remade three times. I know one time was in the 1930s, and in the 1950s, and in theatrical adaptations It is a Bengali novella by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay written in 1917. Sorry, but it was a good thought anyway. Just so you know, I got the information off of wikipedia, from the article concerning the movie, and it is not made up data by any means. There have also been several television adaptations. Devdas is a Bengali story, and a famous one at that. As the author of the article said, "The novella powerfully depicts the prevailing societal customs in Bengal in the early 1900s, which are largely responsible for preventing the happy ending of a genuine love story." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devdas

I saw this movie in January this year and i have to say this is a breathtaking movie. This is sometimes Sanjay Leela Bhansalis best work. And i do consider. The story opens when Devdas family is happy that there son is returning from England. His mother says that she will be the first person to see him.But he goes to see Paro first.Mother is angry. Then a fight happens between Paro mother and Devdas mother. She banned him from seeing her.He meets Chandramukhi. From her Husband Chunilal he is Drunk. The movie is a remake of the 1955 Devdas starring Dilip Kumar as Devdas,Succhitra Sen as Paro,Vyjayanthimala as Chandramukhi.Shahrukh,Aishwarya,Madhuri and Jackie were superb in the movie.Shahrukh delivers a Breathtaking performance. The cinematography and Chereography is Excellent. The music is Excellent with Excellent picturisatioons. This deserves an Oscar Award. To Bad it failed.I don't know why they ignore Indian movies.Costumes are dazzling.Dialogs are wonderful. The climax is powerful. The scence where she runs to the gate is unforgettable and haunting.Kirron Kher and Smita Jaykar do a great job and so do the others. On the whole, this is an amazing movie

Devdas is Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's classic and stunning film! Shahrukh's performance as Devdas was outstanding+! Madhuri Dixit's performance as Chandramukhi was mesmerizing! Aishwarya's performance as Paro was excellent+! Castomes, songs and dances were elegant and lovely. Climax of the film was very sad, and I was speechless as I was holding my breath and crying. Although Devdas was intoxicated most of the time in the film, he has sent an excellent lesson to today's teens and also to young people about what alcohol can do for them. Although it was very depressing after the first time, I have watched this film four times and every time, it got better. I am not sure that this is a true love story, but it can be a true story.
