Well that was a surprise what a great film~If you are looking for a moody atmospheric vampire flick you can't get much better than this~Good mix between action suspense and thrills~I liked the style of the film reminded me a little of silence of the lambs for some reason~Slightly dodgy acting in places but this doesn't spoil a fan~g~tastic plot~ oops i've said it twice nowI thought some of the camera work was superb and there are a few funny moments and jumpy moments that are exactly that~

It's different. It's futuristic and Gothic - with a 1930's style to it.It's a nice change from the normal Hollywood overdone blood gore fest that is a huge bore. This was fresh, with a story behind it and one that may follow. It's nice to see characters who don't all look like surfers, models or Tom Cruise/ Bradd Pitt wannabe's.It's got a cool story, good scenes and setting and the period and props relating to it was really cool. This is one of the few vampire movies that I enjoyed. While it is not at the top of my favorite films, it certainly isn't at the bottom.I would have liked to see more action and fight scenes and that would have made this much better, but it was still cool.

A race of genetically enhanced vampires called the Brotherhood has peacefully coexisted with human beings for 300 years. Crazed renegade vampire Brother Edgar (superbly played with frightening intensity Leo Gregory) starts preying on human beings and plans on changing the natural order of things by infecting everyone with a lethal mutant virus. It's up to dour, compassionate vampire Brother Silus (a fine portrayal by Dougray Scott) and tough, but kind-hearted human police captain Lilly (a splendidly hard-nosed performance by Saffron Burrows) to stop Edgar before it's too late. Writer/director Glenn Standring offers a fresh and intriguing spin on the standard vampire premise which eschews the usual bloodsucker lore in favor of cleverly blending elements from the horror, alternate reality science fiction, and police detective action thriller genres into an inspired, arresting and imaginative synthesis. Moreover, Standring relates the absorbing story ate a slow, yet steady pace, maintains a grim'n'gloomy Gothic atmosphere throughout, and still manages to deliver the expected graphic gore and exciting action set pieces. Better still, Standring brings a maturity and intelligence to the material that's admirably adult and sophisticated in its sensibility. Kudos are also in order for the uniformly excellent acting by a tip-top cast: Scott and Burrows do stand-out work in the lead roles, Gregory makes for a lively and formidable villain, plus there are sturdy supporting contributions by Stuart Wilson as the wise, pragmatic head vampire Brother Augustus, Scott Willis as the sarcastic Detective Jones, and Stephen Ure as disgusting toady Frederick "Freddy" Sykes. Leon Narbey's moody cinematography gives the film a nifty gray and grimy look. Anne Dudley's brooding score likewise does the trick. A pleasingly different and creative fright feature.

I got this because there was a decent deal for a used DVD at Amazon, and I looked at some of the comments at IMDb and figured it would be okay. And it was, well, okay. But if you want something that isn't kind of boring and makes sense at the end, then this isn't the movie for you. It's a good-looking movie, and Dougray Scott remains a handsome fellow, but that's about all you can say for this. And I KNOW Saffron Burrows can be so much more interesting than she is here. They give her nothing to do--just emptiness, no interesting lines, no interesting moments, she has nothing to act with or against. Just standing there looking blank. And that's completely unfair of the filmmakers, because she's a beautiful, intriguing actress. So there's this villainous vampire dude (as opposed to our righteous vampire dude Dougray Scott) and he's, like, poisoning everyone with some sort of virus he's creating and is in his blood? Well, this never comes to much of a boil. He lurks about being evil, and then there's a lackadaisical fight, and then he's stabbed from behind by Saffron. Yeah? So? And then the movie ends with the discovery that there's some baby who is a 'perfect creature' who was born in the virus containment zone. And she's a 'perfect creature' because why? I dunno. Because she's a good-guy vampire AND a human AND immune to the virus? Or some or none of the above? Or sumpthin'. And Saffron and Dougray are going to raise her and are in hiding and Dougray is on the outs with the world of vampires and men for some vague reason. Because he didn't advocate wiping out the infected zone of the city? Or sumpthin'? There needs to be another half hour of plot development or exposition for any of this to make any sense, but I say, oh, god, please, no, no, no. It's all so slow-paced and tedious. No more!! I beg of you!! If you don't like gore (and I don't like gore), then any grossness here is pretty small and minor and contained. You CAN therefore watch this without puking. But that's about all you can say for this.I know some talent went into the making of this film, but none of it gelled.Oh--and it takes place on some sort of alternative world where 100 years after the Victorian age the style of everything is Victoriana married to the 1940s. Horse buggies and old-fashioned clothes and big-ass cars and primitive TVs. Just sorta silly. ...In one shot Dougray Scott in outline looks exactly like the vampire in 'Nosferatu'--the shot and the cut of his frock-coat had to have been taken from that film.
