a disturbing film. this is the most simple definition. because it is a good horror, a seductive psychological movie, occasion to remind a lot of familiar scenes but it represents more. meet between two different civilizations, religious punishment, Gothic story, parable, social critic. it could be each of them. in essence, its virtue is to change the perspective about things, using a theme , at the first sigh, out of surprises. a stranger in a bizarre place. and a fascinating science to drive the story. and beautiful cinematography. and the force of each scene. it is easy to say Laurent Lucas does a great job. but the film has the strange manner to remains long time in the memory like the dark fairy tales from childhood. and, maybe, this detail does "Calvaire" almost an experience. and not only an artistic one.

I found this film through my recommendations on IMDb and when I saw the overall rating was 6.3 I was expecting a pretty good horror.. instead all I got was a big steaming pile of crap.I've been going through a few pages of the reviews people have written on this film and I honestly don't know what I'm missing.. I mean I must know nothing about "art" or "dark comedy" if this is what it supposedly is.I sat there for the entire film thinking "oh, maybe something good will happen" "oh maybe the guy will fight back" but no, no such luck.I imagine Bartel's utter madness was supposed to be creepy but it was stupid, just plain stupid. Don't even get me started on Boris, trying to find his dog, then he comes back with a cow.. it's all just utter stupidity and I don't think it was creative or artsy at all. Just a load of jumbled up crap, with weird, vintage looking cinematography which in my opinion left a lot to desire as well.I enjoy an odd film with twists and turns as much as the next person, but this delivered neither. And what's with the village people? I mean I'd half believe if it was just one guy who was nuts but all of them?! No.It started out badly, and ended even worse. There is no plot or storyline. This is one of the worst films I've ever seen and I don't recommend it to people who like horror, at all. Hell I don't recommend it to anyone.

For those that think they like dark movies, stay away. Unless a proved cinematic dementophile, this movie will likely remove your sense of sangfroid for some time. This incredible Belgian flick is akin to a warped Passion of the Christ. A slow start for sure, that it takes its time into building up its climax is a gift to the senses. The acting was solid, the direction superb. It was the work of the camera, though, that takes this flick to the next level. With washed our color, it takes the natural beauty of nature and turns it against us, dizzying in its great expanses, threatening to swallow up humanity. The action itself swirls with nauseating brutality, leaving the viewer aghast, emotionally drained, and bereft of sense. Yep.Evil Eye Reviews

After searching on the internet i found this film and i am happy to say that my search payed well.It is based in a small village in Belgium where our young talented singer is about to experience something new and painful to be frank, movies like this in my view are not made routinely ,and even if they are they never quite fulfill your expectations and so i recommend this one to all the thriller fans looking for another good movie to watch and be taken aback or be terrified. Its very hard to find such films especially when nobody around you is a fan of thrillers and horror films.Pretty awesome film with pretty awesome effect on the mind and so all in all very entertaining.
