Really quite excellent movie, with great film score from Miklos Rozsa, truly doesn't matter about the SFX quality in the few places they are used. Nicholas Meyer's tour de force. The actors are great.

You have HG Wells who is famous for his books The Time Machine and Thr Invisible Man. He creates a time machine in Victorian England in the late 19th Century. Jack the Ripper stills it and goes to 1979 San Francisco. Seems good on paper but when it played out it was not good at all. Why San Francisco? In most stories the time traveling stories it's the time that changes, not the time and place! David Warner is the fantastic John louis Stevenson aka Jack the Ripper and Malcolm McDowell is HG Wells. And Mary Steenburgen is the lady is distress. She was complete monotone and never showed any feelings. That was the main thing for me. I don't see how this lady gets an acting jobs. What you see is what you get in this case? A malcontent in at the time present day San Francisco chasing Jack the Ripper....

the time travel. and one of the darkest murderers.a hunt. an Malcolm Mc Dowell as the good guy. a film who has the gift to be more than a good adaptation of Welles ' novel because it is, in same measure, mixture of crime, idealism, definition of the XX century and force of the week character. the moral values, the contact with different society, the love problems and the status of hero for a common guy are pieces of a film who could be more than entertainment. because, more than acting, the questions about science and rules are really significant. the fresh air - that is the basic virtue of that lovely film who reminds more than presents.

Nicholas Meyer directed this imaginative if dated film that stars Malcolm MacDowell as H.G. Wells, who is an inventor of a real time machine that he shows off to friends in 1890's London. One of his friends, a surgeon named Dr. John Stevenson(played by David Warner) is really Jack The Ripper, whom the police have finally tracked down to his home, but John/Jack escapes in the time machine to the year 1979, in San Francisco California, where Wells follows him, but instead of his predicted utopia, is shocked to find it more to John/Jack's liking, though Wells is still determined to stop him, with the help of Ann Robbins(played by Mary Steenburgen) a woman he falls in love with... Entertaining and well acted, though marred by being overly preachy and obvious. Still, well worth a look.
