Noah and Emma find assorted toy-type items (including a toy rabbit which Emma names Mimzy and which seems to talk to her) which behave unusually and seem to make the two children much cleverer, piqueing the interest of Noah's science teacher. However, the Government gets wind of these oddnesses, and, well, you know how paranoid Government departments can get.In many respects this is quite a good family movie, with decent performances (especially from the two kids - the girl has an annoyingly squeaky voice but acts well) and a tolerable payoff. It is, however, as dumb as a plate full of chicken wings. Especially irritating is the fact that people question the children and, as soon as the children start explaining this stuff which everyone has witnessed, they are ignored, disbelieved, or both. And as for the paranoid Government department, well, 'nuff said. It's not bad if you don't feel very critical.

"The Last Mimzy" was a movie I looked forward to seeing, since I have loved the story it was to be based on; the 1943 Sci-Fi story "Mimzy Were the Borogoves" by Lewis Padgett. I must say I was disappointed by the totality of the movie. The original story, as a movie could have been awesome due to the themes of the original story, and the state of the art in movie making. The story has two powerful themes;one from the parents view and one from a child's view. For parents, the struggle is how our children can sometimes grow to exceed who we are, and the parental struggle to keep them both safe and let them grow at the same time to be who they are. From the child's view, is the innate sense that they want new things and are passionate about independence and discovery. The movie really fails to get this through the muddled plot and uninspiring direction. I loved the location which worked well, the actors could have worked with better direction and better writing. Also, while I believe we need to be more responsible for maintaining the earth's resources, arbitrarily stuffing this theme into the movie, while missing the point of the original story, comes off lame and mechanical. If you are looking for a family movie, that would be a good project to compare and contrast to the original writing, this is the one.

The makers of chick flicks could take some lessons from The Last Mimzy. The film was made in typical kid flick manner, i.e. all adults are dumb and/or evil and only the kids really know what's going on. When I was a kid, that appealed to me but I stopped watching kid flicks about the same time that I discovered girls. I haven't found a kid flick that appealed to me since that momentous discovery, that is until I watched The Last Mimzy. This movie is far from perfect but it is an entertaining movie for viewers of all ages. So, why can't the makers of chick flicks put out a product that a guy can watch without being bored or ashamed in approximately equal amounts?
