In October 2009, the filmmakers went into an abandoned psychiatric hospital to explore the 'haunted' institution, famous for its radical treatment of patients with mental illness. Electroshock, insulin therapy, and lobotomies were commonplace. Once inside, the filmmakers quickly discovered that they were not alone.

Sometimes tiny details turn a 6 star into a 5 star review. Like the line between a backstory that informs the viewer and crossing that line into some clichéd modern mid-30's social group who have no idea of older flawed medicine and immediately believe 'Evil Lives There!'. The unfortunate line seconds later...'This looks like the opening to every horror movie I've ever sene' hit the level of humour that wasn't intended.Add (in the age of Wikipedia) a shameful shovel full of fake history and mythology...now the optimistic 6 barely scrapes a 3. Lighter touch in the dialogue and an internal logic that wasn't picked out of a Scrabble bag might have saved this nonsense from a generous 2....

First 2/3 of movie i should say its for 5-6 solid points. The ending and that part in the church is something that just shouldn't be.BUT, the first 2/3 or first half of movie is OK and camera is all around but it creates story and scenes which in some found footage movies doesn't exist.I think if maybe ending was different it would be easily one of better found footage movies. At least for 5 stars.Scary factor, in some points very good. Especially middle of the film.Grave Encounters 2 for example scary factor almost non existent.Give it a go and judge yourself. For me top found footage movies definitely The tunnel and Grave Encounters first part.

I have not seen this film yet, but just looking at the trailer alone, I can tell they overdramatized this film. I am also interested in if they filmed at the actual location? It looks like it, as I have been there, and I truly hope it is.First of all, I live in the area. I am from Morris County NJ, born, raised, still live here. Greystone Mental Hospital, among other "Weird NJ" type things such as Clinton Road, Fairy Tale Forest, etc, was one of those things everybody just knew about and it was a fun thing for people to do with their friends, if they could get around the cops. It was just one of those things everyone in the area though about doing, tried to do, etc. Well, when I was in high school in 2003 or 2004, we had a psych project. We were supposed to interview a psychologist at an actual running place, but instead my crazy friends and I, along with a very childlike dad of one of my friends, decided...no, we're gonna break into Greystone, take video footage showing how they mistreated the patients...somehow find that out...maybe find an electric shock thing or something, and then go over to the next building to talk to a "real" psychologist. Back then, they had an extension that was active (no idea if it still is), but the main huge building was entirely abandoned. We snuck around the cops in the middle of the winter (Winter is probably the best time to go because even cops don't want to be out in the freezing cold. I think it was January or December) in broad daylight, but we had one problem once we got to the door. It's locked. How do we get in? So, the dad broke a window at Greystone (ironically, they show a broken window in the trailer. Sometimes I wonder is it the one we broke?)We almost got cut. Now, I am not saying the place is not scary. It is petrifying. However, I found no evidence of the supernatural whatsoever. There was a lot of graffiti, beer cans, strange messages, beds, photos, electric things, child's toys, all kinds of strange things. And the place is huge. And dark. And incredibly frightening.I have my own video footage that I only vaguely remember and I have it on HI-8 tape, so I would need to convert it into DVD format in order to put it on YouTube. I will say props to them for lasting 90 minutes in the place, but I do not believe that anything that remotely looks like that CGI-generated woman on the front of the movie cover exists. The place is terrifying though. It is most terrifying because of the way it looks inside. Beds flipped over, old photographs of patients naked, nurse's diaries (some of which I stole from the place, but a flood in my basement may have ruined them now... I am trying to find them.), and if you're lucky enough you might see some really creepy stuff. We heard noises and ran the hell out of there.Haunted? Who knows. But, this movie would have been better if it was more authentically done. Too bad my HI-8 tape is only about 10 minutes long. I don't think we stayed in there very long and my camera went dead.We did not last long inside. We ran the Hell out of there when we heard a noise. Some of my friends went upstairs and we kind of lost each other for a while which was scary because it is dark in there and kind of looks like a hiding place for bums.I will review again once I have seen the movie. Just thought I would shed a little light from someone who has been there.

I had to give a 1 because of IMDb but seriously, this movie shouldn't even have that, everything about this movie could have made it a great one, but sadly the idiot who wrote it (sean stone) didn't seem to either understand how to make a decent horror movie, or it was constantly played for $h!its and giggles, which it failed at-abysmally. When watching I constantly got the feel that it was supposed to be the "spirits" or whatever it was, was attempting to drive them insane, and if the movie had been played like that, the whole spiritual power thing was both messing with their minds and the camera as a sort of "its trying to drag the audience in as well" that would have worked out perfectly well, especially with the scenes at the end with 'crazy Kate' (again, as portrayed, doesn't make sense) but we're just supposed to believe that a story told to them at the start just happened to appear at the end? No, it doesn't work like that in storytelling, even if its supposed to be 'inspired by real events' it wouldn't work like that. Ah, getting off topic, this thing just feels draining, you don't like the characters and it never pays off with creepy moments or jump scares, so when you've had the built up feeling of adrenaline in your system flow out of you, you'll feel tired and bored, is that what you want in a movie experience? I just wish people wouldn't make things like this, its insulting, tired, lazy and trotted out, but most of all - a complete waste of money that you could spend on anything else to give you a better experience than this movie will give you.
