Imagine that Stephen-King-wanna-be wrote the gay adaptation of Lovecraft and entrusted directing to David-Lynch-wanna-be. If this sounds to you like an interesting concept, make sure to check out "Cthulhu" from 2007. To me, this accomplishment has left the impression of a paranoid schizophrenic trying to meaningfully screen his hallucinations. On the one hand we have a boring, confusing and seemingly pointless story, mediocre acting and characters with whom I could not connect at any level, and when I saw Tori Spelling in one of the roles I was really on the verge of giving up. And yet, on the other hand, we have an interesting camera work and captivating mystical atmosphere that has kept me to finish it. How to evaluate a movie that I barely made to see through (2/10), which at the same time left a quite strong impression (8/10) ...5/10

If you think of this as a SyFy movie of the week, then you are entering into it in the right state of mind. I would not call it cheesy, but it has that low budget feel. The script and dialog could be better, along with some of the acting. It is VERY loosely based in the Lovecraft mythos, but does hit some of the basics. Tori Spelling is mediocre in this role, however she does pull off some of her scenes rather well in the middle of the movie. I have to say her acting at the end of the movie was very over- acted and almost laughable. Luckily, she is not the lead in this movie and the lead did a fairly good job(not great, but decent). If you are looking for strict adherence to the mythos or style of Lovecraft this movie is not for you, but if you like B movies you are surely going to enjoy this movie. This move felt like a fan fiction with higher quality production than usually seen, but that is part of the charm in my opinion.

I did not even know this movie existed until four years after it was made. As a Lovecraft fan I got it without hesitation. The Cthulhu concept is so cool it is hard to mess up but they still managed to do it. How you ask? By, among other things, having a flashback of two teenage boys jacking off together under a pier.On the other hand the movie is creepy from time to time when the entire town except him seems to be part of the cult but it is ruined by changing the focus to homosexual exploration as soon as it started to catch my interest.Avoid at all cost. Lovecraft must be turning in his grave. I am not being homophobic, it is just that when you watch something called Cthulhu you don't want to see Brokeback Mountain.

Everything down to the end credits just was one great journey into a twisted artistic vision right at the mouth of madness... I enjoyed every minute! The atmosphere is very dark and broken and while the main character has to deal with past and present conflicts, the audience is drawn deeper and deeper into this twisted nether land, that is slowly unfolded. I rarely find a gem like this, that manages to give me exactly what I am looking for in a horror movie... this one is slow and gentle and leaves you with a pleasantly disturbing feeling in the end.And I think H.P. Lovecraft would have approved of this adaptation. The horror is what happens behind the lines... the unspoken... the images in your head.
