It's the zombie apocalypse in Australia. Andy (Martin Freeman), his wife Kay, and baby Rosie are traveling down a river on a houseboat. Kay gets bitten and they are forced to seek help overland. After she turns, he is bitten by her. Andy with Rosie are taken in by Vic who turns out to be more of a villain than the zombies. It's a solid zombie road movie. Vic is a great villain and this movie could have easily be simply Andy against Vic. That's the most intense conflict. None of the zombie action is quite as scary. Freeman does an admirable job leading this small zombie movie. This is fine.

Do people in the movie make questionable choices? Yes. That's where the drama comes from in almost all movies (and in people's real lives too for that matter). Does that mean the main characters aren't worth empathizing with? I don't think so. Does anything completely unpredictable happen? Not really. I would compare this movie to an episode of Walking Dead where few zombies show up, and the eposode is mostly about the characters. In a lot of those eps nothing thrilling happens, but you really learn a lot about the characters. This is similar. If you are not a parent, this movie may not be super compelling to you, but I'm a sucker for a parent working really hard to save their kid.

We've seen countless zombie apocalypse movies. Most of them fall back on the same tired cliches, not to mention some of the worst acting you'll ever see. It's great to find a movie that turns the tables and actually delivers a gripping survival tale with heart and great acting. The movie is definitely a dark one though. So don't go in expecting the usual "happily ever after in the apocalypse" ending so many of these movies end up with. This is serious, painful and intense. And it does an amazing job of pulling at your heartstrings.Martin Freeman gives us a truly epic performance and deserves a boatload of awards for his role in this film. If you like dark, gritty movies, tales of survival against insane odds or simply movies about someone trying to find a way to continue when everything seems hopeless... this movie is a must watch.
