Detectives Jimmy and Paul, despite nine years as partners, can still sometimes seem like polar opposites—especially when Paul's unpredictable antics get them suspended without pay. Already strapped for cash and trying to pay for his daughter's wedding, Jimmy decides to sell a rare baseball card that's worth tens of thousands. Unfortunately, when the collector's shop is robbed and the card vanishes with the crook, Paul and Jimmy end up going rogue, tracking down the card and the drug ring behind its theft, all on their own time and without any backup—except for each other.

With anyone else this is just a TV movie - but to be honest the cast make this movie and without them it is just a second rate cop flick. Story wise it's about as predictable as there is BUT the way it is acted makes it watchable and quite enjoyable. This is not a movie to sit in with and take in - it's a move to watch when you're a bit tired or after a few drinks where you need some entertainment. What more do you want, a bit of action, some laughs some faces you know and a good conclusion. It won't win any awards but as a bit of good movie fodder it does very well. You won't hate it. you won't love it - it's just there - enjoy - I did.

Kevin Smith directs but does not write this tribute to 1980s buddy cop films.Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan are the mismatched pair. Jimmy (Bruce Willis) and Paul (Tracy Morgan) on suspension from a drug bust gone wrong. Jimmy decides to sell an antique baseball card to help pay for his daughter's wedding but when making the transaction he gets robbed and the card is sold to a notorious criminal. The pair then go about retrieving the card, even by finding one of the crooks who robbed him (Sean William Scott) to help them out.At the same time they come across a drug lord who has kidnapped someone and Paul thinks his wife is having an affair. With a music score by Harold Faltermeyer this film certainly wants you to think of Beverly Hills Cop, Running Scared, Turner & Hooch, Tango & Cash as well as other 80s mismatched buddy comedies. The trouble is the script here is rubbish, many of the side characters are annoying and there is no chemistry between Morgan and Willis. In fact Willis is just sleepwalking it here. I do not think he even tries to act any more. The story is derivative and none of the so called funny antics add much. Sure Smith can bring out a few mild laughs here and there but this is poor from him.

Cop Out is not a Kevin Smith movie. Meaning he did not write it. He was just hired to direct this movie, somebody else's movie. Bad idea. This movie desperately needed the wit of a Kevin Smith script. It could have used some of the outrageous moments Smith is known for as well. This script is safe, tame and ultimately boring. It's a movie about mismatched buddy cops which doesn't stand out at all from all those other movies about mismatched buddy cops. Anybody could have directed this thing. Smith probably wishes he hadn't.Jimmy and Paul are our two cops, played by Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan respectively. Willis totally mails it in. He's playing the straight guy but he plays it so straight he's bordering on comatose. And Morgan, perhaps overcompensating for the lifeless Willis, loudly mugs his way through the whole thing. At least Morgan is trying which is more than you can say for Willis. Unfortunately the material is so bad there's not much for anybody to work with. Jokes fall flat, gags are lame, there's barely a laugh to be had in this supposed comedy. Supporting characters add no support, the only performer aside from Willis and Morgan who is notable at all is Seann William Scott. Sadly he is only notable for how incredibly annoying his character is. Then there's the main villain, a drug dealer with a baseball memorabilia obsession, who comes across as more clownish than menacing. The plot, such as it is, is not particularly interesting, centering on Jimmy's attempts to retrieve a stolen baseball card from the aforementioned clownish bad guy. The action sequences? Well, let's just say that Smith is not much of an action director. Dialogue is his strong suit. Well at least it is in his own movies. This is not his movie. Nobody would want to take credit for this one.
