My wife and I really enjoyed this movie. I loved firstly how well Rob Brown did in his very first screen event. Before I get too far into this, we have both seen Good Will Hunting...we got rid of it! So long ago we drew no comparisons as so many reviewers on here seem to have done.I love movies of situ's where old older person mentors a younger one and this is one of those kind of films.I guess I should confess, due to our disposition we don't go to cinemas anymore. We wait till all the movies we are interested in, come out on DVD.I like all of Sean Connery's roles except the James Bond one or two or?? I also like Anna Paquin, and it would have been nice to see something progress with her and Rob Brown...mixed colour relationship and all that might throw up. Oh me! I run a catalogue of all our DVD collection and I can tell the readers this is one movie that gets a lot of repeat viewing here at home. My father-in-law says you only need to view a movie once. However, I find every time I view a movie, I often pick up something I missed before.I don't want to give away too much, but let me assure readers you will not be disappointed with this movie. Even the cranky old role played by F Murray-Abrahams.
It is a story between a old writer, William and a young talent writer, Jamal. The young man broke into the old man's apartment, then they meet each other. When he enters in a private school with his great basketball skills and writing skills, he finds the old man is one of the great writers. Jamal visits William's home and they start writing together every night. They share their story, too. William tell Jamal do not bring anything he wrote out of the apartment the professor helps Jamal improve a lot and tests him, Jamal shows some of his articles which he wrote in the apartment to his school and gets in trouble. Jamal thought it's William's fault because he didn't tell him. so they fought. Finally, William comes to an important meeting and helps Jamal explain Jamal 'COPIED' other articles because he promise do not tell anybody they write together every night. At that time William merely gave Jamal the first paragraph and let him keep writing. In the end both of them recognize that they are the family they are looking for
Because of scoring exceptionally high on a statewide standardized exam and being an exceptionally good basketball player Jamal Wallace is sent to a prestigious prep school in Manhattan. He soon befriends the reclusive writer, William Forrester. The friendship leads William to overcome his reclusiveness and for Jamal to overcome the racial prejudices and pursue his true dream - writing. Finding Forrester is a 2000 Drama starring Sean Connery, Rob Brown, F. Murray Abraham, Anna Paquin and Michael Pitt and the film was directed by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting). What i really liked about this film was the relationship between Jamal and William they had some sort of father and son relationship or whatever you wanna call it but both Brown and Connery are really great in this film and they have a pretty good chemistry plus i liked Abraham as Prof. Robert Crawford he was kinda of the main 'villain' of the Story because he didn't believe Jamal and he didn't believe that he would have a future besides Basketball of course Paquin is also really good. Overall i don't think that there's much more to say it was just a really good Drama with the main actors being really good in their roles and Gus Van Sant just knows how to direct a well made and well directed Drama plus Sean Connery is good in anything he stars.
Finding forrester is a solid 8/10 stars. Because no movie is perfect, even though this film comes close. The story begins with a kid rapping to set the scene in the greater bronx area. With a student/ protagonist named jamal. Jamal is a competition grade writer but refuses to show this to his mentors. Until his test scores come back and he is sent to a private school with a teacher that does not trust him. Jamal then sneaks into a flat to see the (window man). In which he Gets spotted and leaves his bag. He later received his bag back only to find all his journals with notes scattered throughout. this man in the window was william forrester we later find out. A man who wrote one of the greater novels of all time. Jamal then slowly starts to gain foresters trust to help him learn his true potential in writing. Where forrester keeps giving lessons and jamal gets greater and greater. So when he writes his big paper and steals the title of one of forrester's previous works, jamal finds himself about to be kicked out of the private school even though he wrote that paper. Even with that they don't let it go. the school later decides to make a deal with jamal saying if he helps them win state for basketball they will let it slide. To which he fails. Later on he quits basketball to focus on writing and many colleges are looking to give him scholarships. Overall i think you will like this movie if u are into with hero/ mentor movies along with writers. Or just about anyone. I would recommend this movie.
