Blue Crush 2 (2011)

"Blue Crush 2" is the sequel of "Blue Crush" and this one has to do with a girl who is haunted by the memory of her deceased mother and she goes to South Africa to fulfill her mother's dream of surfing in Jefferys Bay (J-Bay).I did not like this movie as much as the first and I think that this movie is a repeat of the first because and in the first movie we had a girl who was haunted by her own daemons and she was trying so hard to get rid from them and fulfill her own dream (this is a difference).Finally I think that this movie It's not as good as the first one I believe that the only interpretation that was good was Sasha Jackson's who played as Dana.

I know several people that was involved in this production, and lots of them are disappointed and were not aware it's going to be such a bad movie. The target market are teens, but teens are way more discerning. It's really an insult to South African surfing, contains bad acting and there are lots of big continuity errors. For instance, the culminating competition in the story held at Jeffreys Bay was shot at a KZN South Coast spot (Look at the jet ski's registration number) You've got actors that can't surf and surfers that can't act. Bruce Gold was portrayed as a pilot, why did they not let him play himself? Why cast Twiggy and Jordy in non surfing roles? Then you have the girls take off on a wave, and suddenly when they zoom out, it's clearly visible they are on completely another wave, at another location. This is not the error of the cast and crew, I believe this is the error of the people that produced and directed this movie. What were they thinking? I guess their only goal was to sell a couple of DVD's to unsuspecting buyers and make something from rental outlets. If you have that kind of budget, why no produce something of more significance and a high standard?

This appears to be a direct-to-video movie release. It was shot on a small budget and on a short schedule and using mostly unknown actors. You get what you pay for. Still, we enjoyed it for the fluff of a diversion, with some cute girls in surfing mode.For me the biggest surprise and the most interest is British actress, trained in Hollywood and with a good American accent, Sasha Jackson as Dana. This is Dana's story. She is 18 and not ready to fulfill her wealthy father's dream of her college education. Dana's mother, a surfer girl originally from Soith Africa, died of cancer when Dana was only 5. Her memories of mom are mostly from the photos she has. She yearns for more. When dad is on a business trip, and Dana at 18 is an adult and apparently has full access to their wealth, leaves a note that she is headed to South Africa. As the story unfolds we learn that she wants to visit the places her mom knew, and surf the same waves. A southern California girl, Dana is an accomplished surfer.Sasha Jackson brings a fresh face and a ready smile to the screen. Her acting is a cut above the others and I can only hope she gets better roles. I read her biography on IMDb and she apparently was a high level diver and trampolinist in England, and learned to surf for this role. She is the best reason to see Blue Crush 2.Her journey is NOT without surprises. The first is when she hits the first beach, putting her backpack into a beach locker, only to find it broken into and items stolen. She makes friends with a girl named "Pushy" and also with a couple of guys. She ends up living temporarily with a group, a "family" of sorts, of beach bums. But for a low budget it has a nice look to it. Elizabeth Mathis is the new friend, Pushy. Ben Milliken is the new friend with the old bus for a home, Tim. Australian Sharni Vinson is the bitchy primadonna surfer Tara. (But she does soften up at the end.) SPOILERS: Dana's dad hops on a plane and eventually looks her up at the final beach of her journey. They make up, and it seems that Dana is ready to put her mom's death behind her and get on with life.

'BLUE CRUSH 2': Two Stars (Out of Five)I'm a big fan of the original 'BLUE CRUSH' (from 2002), it's kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm not really into surfing or surf movies but I do highly enjoy that film and it's probably my favorite of the genre (other than maybe 'POINT BREAK'). Now, nine years later, comes another direct to video sequel. Another sequel in name only (merely cashing in on the brand name of the first movie) as the film has nothing to do with the original other than it's about surf girls trying to follow their dreams of being surfers. It was directed and produced by Mike Elliot, who's produced a slew of direct to video sequels ('DEATH RACE 2', 'SMOKIN ACES 2' and 'AMERICAN PIE: THE BOOK OF LOVE', just to name his most recent) and directed one ('BEETHOVEN'S BIG BREAK', his only other directing credit). The film was written by Randall McCormick who's made a name for himself writing 'B' movie sequels (like two 'SCORPION KING' films as well as 'SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL'). This time the film stars three lovely young ladies by the names of Sasha Jackson, Sharni Vinson and Elizabeth Mathis. The girls are beautiful eye candy (especially Vinson, who also recently starred in the excessive sequel 'STEP UP 3D') but they're not nearly as interesting or memorable as Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez and pro surfer Sanoe Lake from the original. Everything about the film just feels like a stale imitation 'wannabe'. This chapter tells the story of a young rich girl named Dana (Jackson) grieving over the death of her mother and absence of her father's love. She knows that her mom always dreamt of surfing Jeffereys Bay in South Africa so she decides to leave the security of her Malibu home behind and venture to Africa in order to fulfill her mother's dreams. Once there she meets two other young female surfers by the names of Pushy (Mathis) and Tara (Vinson). One, Tara, is a successful 'Roxy' surfer and the other dreams of being one. So Dana and Pushy decide to conquer their surfing dreams together, while some bitter rivalry ensues with Tara. The first 'BLUE CRUSH' made Kate Bosworth a star (before that she was pretty much unknown), it also made her one of my favorite actresses (along with her work that followed but 'CRUSH' definitely introduced me to her). I thought she not only obviously looked great but gave a good performance (as did the other two leads). That film definitely made you care about their characters. You don't have that with this film. The girls look cute and they might be able to act, if given a chance in another film, but here they're not relatable or interesting in the least. That's probably due in large part to weak directing and a poorly written screenplay (more so than the girls' acting). The story just isn't involving and the surf scenes aren't visually interesting or thrilling at all.
