Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005)

Spoiler Alert!!! I liked this movie despite all of the plot holes in the movie. I liked how it was directed by the same girl who directed Pet Semetary which is an awesome horror movie. The only thing that really bothered me about this movie was the fact that they killed off the brother, David I mean he was the most likable character besides the lead. And at the end the sister didn't even seem concerned about her brother. I mean the villain even mentions that he's dead at the end. The film is pretty cool about these twin siblings trying to solve the mysterious deaths of all of these popular kids at their school. Little by little they learn the history about the murdering ghost. I'm surprised this film has that low of a rating because this film was directed by the same person who did Pet Semetary and that movie to me was kind of boring at times. This movie however is even more entertaining than Pet Semetary. Overall I give this film a 6 out of 10.

After reading a lot of hard critics about this picture, I spent some years wondering myself whether this movie would be worth a watch or not. As a fan of the previous versions of this trilogy-- despite their flaws--, I decided watching it today and I don't feel any remorse for that. First, "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary" has some unintentional funny scenes, like the death in the tanning machine, which got comical for such irresponsibility from the female employee. All the scenes involving the older Grace Taylor also felt funny, especially because she acted like a pothead in most situations. The photography directing is nice as well, delivering some beautiful scenes-- even the supposedly scary ones. My first complaint concerning this picture is related to the quite conventional way that Bloody Mary appears; I mean, it felt like I was rewatching 1973's "The Exorcist" for the thousandth time, or that Samara just came out of the television again. Also, the acting doesn't seem that professional, and the murderer was as predictable as it could be. However, I still think this version has less plot holes than the original one-- which never tried to make sense or be plausible. In my opinion, this third version just proves that you can continue a series without spoiling the other installment's quality, if you are up to make some innovations.

I didn't know it at the time but it's apparently the third movie in the Urban Legends series. It has no links to the others. This felt like a lower-budget Final Destination with attempts at original-looking kills. The "originality" comes from the deaths looking like they're urban legends actually happening. I will admit that the scene involving the mirror and spiders was very creepy and effective, even gruesome. The other urban legends weren't so memorable, and a few were actually amusing (not necessarily a bad thing). Bloody Mary herself was not really scary to me, even sometimes looking ludicrous. If the rest of the horror had been to the level of the mirror scene, it would have been a much stronger movie. I was surprised at how good the lead actors playing brother and sister were. They looked their age and were believable. Not so much for everyone especially the big blonde jock with the kid haircut. I saw the "surprise" coming a while away and the whole last act was kind of boring and felt too long.Rating: 4.5 out of 10 (Average)
