Raise Your Voice (2004)
A coming-of-age story centered around a small-town singer brokenhearted by the death of her brother in a car crash, who had secretly submitted her for a summer session at a performing arts academy in Los Angeles. In the academy, she experiences a whole new way of life in the big city, far from the small town lifestyle she's used to.

This movie is such a classic. Obviously not sophisticated but that's not the point of the movie. Just a solid feel good classic. Hilary Duff is great.
I'm amazed at the "love it" comments, vs the "anti-Duff" comments. RT rates it at 15%, and it probably would be that if another actress was the lead. The mood of the movie was wrong, and even Duff couldn't quite bring it out its pit, or maybe casting Duff was wrong if they wanted a in the pit movie (which I don't think was their intention). Lots of people criticise Duff for this movie, when the problem is the casting and directing of it. They appear to have hired Duff to lighten up the movie, but she can only do so much, and the task was probably beyond any actress. It really needed a lot of work done to it before being made into a final product.
Now your probably thinking, "He gave it 10 stars?? Only some horny 17 year old guy would give it that" and I'm not here to disagree. Seen it last night on TV and thought it was awesome... Storey was great, the feeling was good, and most of all the actors were top notch. Some say if you took Hillie and her music out of the movie, I wouldn't want a bar of this film... and that's probably true too. BUT! She was in it, so it made the movie a thrill to watch. You may call it bias, but its the fact. hell, put Hillie in the worst movie ever and ill give it 10 stars. 10/10
Well, Raise Your Voice is about a small town girl with a huge dream. Though her father won't let her, Terri wants to go to a prestigious summer music school, and only the best singers and musicians can get in. Terri is later accepted. She goes behind her father's back, and pretends to be at her aunts house. Some find this plot stupid. It the lie that confuses things in the movie. The lie is supposed to make the movie. The lie is why Terri goes to the music school. It's also about a father/daughter relationship, and how rocky it can seem and how much a father can care. You just need to talk and he'll understand. Terri is supposed to find herself in this movie. She wants to get over her brothers death, but it keeps coming back to her. She has to accept the fact that the accident wasn't her fault and that others are there for her. Terri finds friends and then finds herself at the end of the movie. This is one awesome movie. In my opinion, one of the best.
