Killer Clowns from Outer Space is a peculiar horror comedy. That isn't quite as bonkers as its title would have you to believe. Aliens arrive in a small town via a spaceship that looks exactly like a circus tent. Their goal? to take all the townspeople and turn them into intergalactic cotton candy snacks. After most of the town is taken, it's up to a ragtag misfit group of young adults to take the fight to the Alien clowns.Going into this film I was expecting a bat-sh*t crazy time. Instead for the wonderfully campy story it played itself far too safe. One of the biggest complaints I have with the film is the poor lack of humour. Other then the funky costume design, there are no real jokes to be found in this film. Sure it's fun to watch, and for it's small budget the film is highly accomplished. There just seemed to be a lack of mischief that a film like The Gremlins perfected. On the plus side the film does have a nasty side to it, when certain scenes need it.Other then the Alien clown gimmick the film doesn't have much going for it. The characters are all pretty standard, they are all given typical clichéd personalities, but it didn't bother me as much with this film. It's clear to see the actors are all having a good time with this film. The film has a brilliant concept, which in the hands of a more accomplished genre film-maker such-as Joe Dante, could of made for a memorable cult classic. Instead this film whilst it does have its moments, felt like a missed opportunity.

Where do I even begin? This film is hilariously made, both in bad and good ways. First off, the story is very random, but also pretty good in my opinion. The acting is so-so. The performances in this film are very cheesy and sub par at best. And when I say cheesy, I mean the most corniest acting ever done in a film. I mean seriously. It's almost funny every time someone is on screen, as viewers might just wait for the next stupid thing to be said/acted out as. Also, the acting isn't very believable in a few scenes. The editing, however, is the biggest flaw, as this film is terribly edited. The reason why I say that is because scenes cut off at random times. The sound sometimes is gone too in a few scenes. All in all, the editing is just very sloppy and not great in the slightest. The special effects in this film are actually very well done, though. So besides all that, I honestly don't know if I care for this film or not. As there are a lot of flaws, but at the same time, the amount of hilarious cheesiness and good special effects are almost enough for me to recommend to anyone who wants to see anything out of the ordinary, or to anyone looking for an extremely corny 80s movie to laugh at. As this film doesn't disappoint in the slightest with those 2 things.

"Killer Klowns from Outer Space" is a... truly fascinating movie. It has a premise that is so blindingly stupid that it becomes awesome, and it plays that premise completely straight. In fact, it handles the entire premise with the utmost seriousness, which only highlights the sheer ludicrousness of the whole idea of evil alien clowns and the goofy ways they kill people. In fact, the most entertaining parts of the movie are when the movie just busts out the most bizarre, silly methods of murder EVER. It's pure cotton candy (non-cocoon variety) for the brain: the gloriously cheesy dialogue ("Nobody's gonna put me in a balloon again") and hammy acting are just over-the-top enough to be funny, but not to the point of being irritating. I also suspect that the characters are intended to be parodies of many horror movie characters, particularly the violent thug cop and the love triangle. The actors all do a pretty good job, and it's a credit to them that they are able to sound so earnest and serious when they're... well, trying to free people from giant balloons or cotton-candy cocoons. How can they keep a straight face?John Vernon as the red-neck deputy Curtis Mooney is the only really bright light in the acting stakes. The special effects are not that brilliant but that suits the movie well, this is not an FX extravaganza but it is one of the best low budget comedy horror movies you will see. Apart from the big-top space ship and low-grade plastic weapons there's also the klown car, the klown women (looking as sexy as the stripper in Funny Man), popcorn that grows into monsters and custard pies that dissolve flesh; almost every aspect of the circus clown act is twisted into some fiendish device here. The Chiodo Brothers gave us some nice matte paintings, great make-up effects, and just enough imagination to drag through the laborious 85 minute running time. Overall rating: 7 out of 10.
