A Grumpy Ole Bollywood story showing happy families starting on a positive note, followed by a tragedy being finally resolved in the climax is so prevalent since generations that we believe this is the story of every Indian family, the irony being: this is the story of every other family, not ours.Shakun Batra's Kapoor & Sons Since 1921 kills this myth and tells the story that is more ours than anyone else's. Kapoor & Sons is a story of a dysfunctional family living in the hills of Coonoor. A financially struggling Harsh Kapoor(Rajat Kapoor) living in a house with an unhappy wife Sunita(Ratna Pathak Shah) and heart patient but larger-than- life father(Rishi Kapoor) whose last wish is to have a full family photo being framed before his death.Harsh and Sunita have two sons: Rahul(Fawad Khan), the elder and perfect son who is a successful writer settled in UK and Arjun(Siddharth Malhotra), the younger son struggling on his own novel and surviving by doing different jobs in the States. Both Rahul and Arjun arrive home after learning that their Dadu has suffered from a cardiac arrest. This is where they both meet and become involved with the same girl Tia(Alia Bhatt), a freelancer taking care of an ancient property in the town and looking to sell it.The movie moves at a subtle pace giving us some beautiful and light moments until a moment when a web of secrets slowly start to unravel including a lie that threatens to tear the family apart. It gives you a feel-good vibe while keeping you attached with every character all through and giving a healthy dose of laughter induced frequently by the modern-age porn-loving Dadu and his antics. The performances of the whole cast are admirable. Rajat Kapoor as a man under the pressure of obligation to his family but unappreciated for his efforts is excellent. Ratna Pathak Shah as a faithful wife living in a burdened marriage and a proud mother is exemplary. Rishi Kapoor with his sarcastic one-liners is lovable. His interactions with his grandsons regarding porn is a treat to watch. Alia Bhatt is bubbly and beautiful at the same time. Siddarth Malhotra is the weakest link in the movie unable to transform himself from a cheated yet moved-on teenager to a distraught adult is unconvincing. But it is Fawad Khan who delivers a masterclass and holds the movie together as Rahul, the not-so-perfect son showing why he is a celebrated actor in Pakistan. Sukant Goel as Wasim also deserves a mention. The only flaw in the movie is the unraveling of the mysteries that you are confused, who is to blame and who is to be sympathized. All in all a decent byproduct by Shakun Batra who after his 'Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu' has made a mark with his mature narratives. The movie delivers a beautiful message that even if there are problems, one should never abandon his family.

I watched this movie earlier this evening tonight .I bought it online and made up little cozy environment to watch the movie. Movie Begins with A plot on a family who have there share of grief and love for each other just like it mostly happens in any families. Alia's charterer is little exaggerated but hey that how mostly girls are in today's world . Rishi Kapoor is undoubtedly the most love bale character of the movie All the character are good looking people so, that's a add on to the eyes and to box office as well.not that i am saying that you cant expect that from any Bollywood movie but this movie was an exception to my general perception towards all this "Big" Cinema we have running wild in our country. I watched till end and overall i am impressed i vote 8 stars for this one. P.s If you are north Indian family and then you may wanna skip this movie watching with your family

After a long time, I watched a Hindi film and it turned out to be a film that I can lend my criticism to. First thing first, it reminds me of Death at a Funeral! And it also reminded me of This is where I leave you.Now I was not expecting Dharma Production to go beyond mediocrity of the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai-s and the Student of the Year-s of the world... but with this one and a few other such ventures, they have tried to redefine their brand or must I say it is the influence of the 20th century fox collaboration...The movie as a whole was not bad, maybe didn't really suit the taste of the shallow Indian audience, but it was not the worst of the season. The movie however was full of scenes curated in cliché manner, induced into what we can call a decent plot. Then there are the Dharma production influence to introduce the audience some ideologies which the film house subscribes to, but it all falls into place. It is not really new, but this old wine in new bottle is refreshing, thanks to some decent performances and good handling and development of characters for the script. Acting is not as much a paralytic constrain in today's film industry in here as it used to be some years back.Rishi Kapoor was the best of the lot, Alia Bhatt impressed me with her rendition of the cliché- parents died in the plane crash role given to her. I think her role was initially stretched too far then completely forgotten. The director didn't spend a lot of time innovating the characters of either Rajat Kapoor or Siddharth Malhotra, they both were as if playing a character they left behind in their last film. While Kapoor can have a claim to acting prowess, this is the limit Malhotra can reach with his capabilities as a performer. Ratna Pathak was good, she has always been good at what she does on screen. The courage of Fawad Khan to take up the role that has a Dharma Ideology stamp took me by surprise... he was not really extraordinary and he didn't really do much different than what he did in the other movie, Khoobsurat! The peripheral characters were all too cliché and with them around Coonnoor didn't really seem like it was in South, but more like it is somewhere in Himachal. And for everything that is coming out of Bollywood, does it really have to Punjabi? Agreed that everyone wants to become as full of life as the Punjabi in their best of dreams, I mean no offense to the state and its rich culture and brilliant people, it is high time that people start showing other states and the associated culture in their renditions... for a change?Dialogue delivery was a concern, each of the character playing Kapoors had a different style despite being from the same family which was odd. Alia Bhatt didn't sound Mumbai-kar in her role either. And Siddharth Malhotra doesn't have another way to speak his lines anyways. This is at the end of the day a short novel material taken from a good movie from abroad... and lacked depth, more in the essence than the rendition and justifications that the actors try to bring to the table.Over all, enjoyable watch...

What a movie!!! A real portrayal of the LGBT character instead of what Bollywood has portrayed .. This is what they are in real life..just too normal to recognize.. Perfect son!! Successful and sensitive and understanding.. I watched this movie twice and it was as refreshing as it was when I watched for the first time.. First of all !! Hats off Fawad!! Take a bow!!! You deserve an award !! Rishi Kapoor is just superb!! And the storyline direction cameras were just brilliant !!! It serves all purpose for a perfect family drama... Of course Sid is a bit stone faced but gradually he will improve..all in all the representation of Gay character was just brilliant and he did it so smoothly.. This is what Indian audience need instead of all those girly feminine stereotypes of gay men..
