The Diary of Anne Frank (2009)

Called the most accurate adaptation of Anne Frank’s moving diary, the film chronicles the Frank family as they flee from the Nazis in Amsterdam. Hiding behind a bookcase in a secret annex with random bombs exploding, Anne faces friction with her family, a desire for independence and the first stirrings of young love. It’s a remarkable record of a young woman’s first-hand observations of the Holocaust.

This movie was very captivating. It gave a good sense of what the times were like during the Holocaust, and what Jews had to go through to survive. It made you feel empathy the characters. The actors were very good at embracing their character and giving you a better sense of the characters personalities. In the book Anne didn't go into depth about her family's looks because she wasn't actually planning on anyone reading her journal. The movie gave a better perspective of her family without as much dialogue. I'm glad that I read the book before I watched the movie. The movie left out some of the smaller details the book was able to explain in more depth. I had to keep reminding myself that Anne's diary was first hand, and replace some of the missing details from knowledge from the book. The most intense scene was where there was a bombing going on outside of the Annex. You could feel the fear Anne's family was feeling. They felt trapped because there was nowhere "safer" for them to go, they just had to wait for the bombing to end and hope the Annex didn't get bombed.

This is a short mini series only 5 30 minutes episodes. This was one of the best portrayals I have ever seen. The actress who played her was amazing and looked so much like her. I made me almost cry, made me laugh and made me angry. The last episode was very nervewrecking, you knew what was going to happen yet you wanted it to turn out differently. Despite it being during the war she was still your average teenager and you can still relate to her. I still like Anne Frank The Whole Story best but this was a wonderful version too. This portrayal of Anne can be egotistical and short-tempered. There are a few scenes where Anne talks about her changing body and her sexuality and one scene where she touches her breasts in a sexual way. The devotion of the "helpers" warms my heart at seeing people who put their lives on the line to help hide the people in the annex. When the nazi's finally do come is such a heartbreaking scene especially when you know how close the war was to ending.

My Mother always told me the story of Anne Frank when I was a child, she told me about a young German Jewish girl who hid from the Nazi's in Amsterdam with her family and kept a diary during World War 2. For some reason she never told me( or I just didn't remember ) what happened to her in the end. Not ashamed to say the end of this series very nearly destroyed me, probably the saddest scene in any film I have ever watched. Ellie Kendrick is the best Anne I have seen. Unlike Anne Frank: The whole story this series contains direct quotes from Anne's diary. It only follows Anne's time in hiding, unlike Anne Frank: The whole story which deals with Anne's life before hiding, during hiding and after capture. This is an important series that should be seen by all. It changed my life.

My wife read the Diary of Anne Frank last year for English class, and when we visited Amsterdam we went to see the house. The house in this TV series is exactly the same as the real house, almost to the extent that I wonder if they filmed it there. The story as told in this series is very close to the book and shows Anne as she shows herself in her diary. An intelligent, boisterous, moody, lively teenage girl. The fact that she was SO full of energy and ideas and yet was cooped up in those rooms for so long is the really moving thing about the book I think and they have captured it very well in the series. This BBC drama feels completely authentic, I can't think of anything to criticise it about at all!
