The Last Broadcast (1998)

When you read the plot and/or see the DVD cover, this movie seems really attractive. Then wait until you watch it..The movie was released in 1998 and so the DVD cover proudly says "May have influenced Blair Witch... it certainly preceded it". I don't know when the production and the filming has started for this Last Broadcast, but The Blair Witch's production started in 1994 till 1997 when they started the filming. Then the Blair Witch was released in 1999. So the "preceded" thing is very relative.To come back to the Last Broadcast, all is cheap. Some parts are cosy indeed (the geeks, the clothes, the computers), but the film is more than slow and really goes nowhere, plus all effects are deeply amateurish. I was very disappointed.The Blair Witch Project is no genius work neither but it works! (at least the first time you watch it).Regards.

I love the camcorder style of filmaking. Blair Witch, cloverfield, quarantine, diary of the dead, and paranormal activity are all scary and entertaining. So what's wrong with one of the first to tackle this style of filmaking, why didn't I like it? Well, the main reason was that it was pretty boring, it was like solving a puzzle, but without the satisfaction of figuring it out. The characters are pretty bland, I can't even remember their names. Really all I remember is some dudes go looking for the jersey devil, they die, and the only survivor is convicted of the crime.ON a posotive note, it has a great twist ending. The killer, is something you will never believe. But it leads to it becoming third person. In the end, it isn't horrible, but I don't recommend it.

I have heard that this movie came before the Blair Witch Project, which I thought was excellent (and in my opinion it's popularity is well deserved), and that it may have inspired the Blair Witch Project. Like the Blair Witch Project, the Last Broadcast is marketed as a horror movie. Although I wasn't expecting "another" Blair Witch Project, I was expecting a horror movie in the same low budget style as the Blair Witch Project. That's, after all, how this movie is marketed, a low budget horror movie. Well, it's certainly low budget, but it's definitely no horror.Everything this movie tries to do fails. If there is a C (or even D) category for movies, this is it. Dead End and the Blair Witch Project are two low budget movies which prove that low budget movies can be A movies, for sure. The Last Broadcast is unprofessional and only succeeds in misleading the viewer. It's hard to be specific without giving away any spoilers, and that's exactly what this movie requires to be exposed. Whatever you expect to see, you won't. However this movie is marketed, whatever the DVD box tells you on the backside, just know that it's misleading and unless you don't have any expectations, you will be disappointed.There is nothing else worth to say about this movie. Imagine renting the Terminator and instead of seeing some science fiction action, you get to see a lower than a straight-to-DVD quality movie about something that is supposed to resemble the Terminator. That's the Last Broadcast. A complete waste of time.The tagline of this movie is "what actually happened that night in the woods?" My answer is "nothing interesting".

... a twist that apparently wasn't that popular.Yes, this is The Last Broadcast, a movie that's suffered the undignified fate of never being reviewed without someone mentioning "The Blair Witch Project", despite the fact that this was released over ten months earlier.In all essences it's a superior work, though a strangely uncompelling one. The concept of parodying the documentary format works well, and has much to say. Sadly, however, what it does say isn't always as interesting as it could be, the narrative pull lacking urgency.By the time we get to the twist - which is arguably satisfying, even if it eliminates the mystery and doesn't even make sense (who is filming those final long shots?) - then whatever compulsion the picture had has already dissipated. A very clever idea and decently made on the budget, but the execution fails to live up to the potential.
