Rainbow Brite, and her magical horse Starlite, must stop an evil princess and her underlings from taking over the planet Spectra. When they meet Orin, the wise Sprite tries to make the two children get along and work together to stop the evil Princess. Orin tells them that they can only destroy her by combining their own powers against her. Getting in the way of their mission is the sinister Murky Dismal and his bumbling assistant Lurky who, as usual, are lavishing in the new gloom created by the darkening of Spectra, as well as trying to steal Rainbow's magical color belt.

This was one of the first movies I ever got to see in theaters, and for nothing else it's a nostalgia trip. I must have watched it a lot as a kid cause I remember it pretty clearly, without having seen it recently. The script was a cheese factory, and the characters are pretty silly, but it was never meant for adults. I personally as an adult found the princess to be entertaining, but mostly I credit this movie, and the series from which it was made as being very positive for young girls. Rainbow Bright, while being a bit silly, was a strong female presence in network after network of male oriented cartoons intended for the same audience. What ever sillyness and unrealness came from the movie are secondary to me. It's a nostalgia trip, and a good memory to boot. Show this movie to your young female children. The boys won't like it, but I think that most young girls will still see what I saw in it almost twenty years ago.

Personally I think that all cartoons are stupid. However, this movie is perfect for little kids as they grow up. Sure the script may not have been perfect, but do you really expect a cartoon from the 80's to win an Academy award for perfect script? But it's is perfect to let your young children watch. It is the same Good vs. Evil story. The idea of a protector of colors may seem stupid for adults, however, this movie was clearly made FOR CHILDREN ONLY. If you want an academy award winning movie, well then keep out of the family section at blockbuster. But I still would fully recommend this for ANY child and parents, it will keep them occupied.

I don't care what people say. This movie is SO entertaining. I got the movie when I was 6, and I watched it for about the 50th time last week. I'm 21 now, and I still find this Really entertaining. Just because it was meant for kids does not in any way mean that it is only able to be loved by kids. Yes, the plot is rather... plebian, in most aspects, but it is endearing and has a very compelling quality to it. I still have my toys, and I want the belt she wore. I am also looking for the first movie, and don't know the title. If anyone knows, get in touch with me...

All right guys, here's the deal with this movie. it's not the best but for all of you 80s kids out there it'll bring back fond memories of your childhood. Personally, i love this movie. i still love rainbow brite and the care bears. so, in my opinion, if you aren't a kid now or were a kid that loved and/or loves rainbow brite you won't like this movie at all.
